NEWS ARCHIVESFebruary 1, 2008 Great Outdoor Events Planned For Winterlude Over the weekend I had the opportunity to work as a server at the annual Community Leaders Breakfast, which was held at City Hall as part of the official launch of Winterlude. It was great to see so many residents participate in such a fantastic event. I would like to thank both the National Capital Commission and Enbridge for hosting the launch. Winterlude is a great opportunity for everyone in our community to enjoy some outdoor fun during the winter months. I encourage you and your family to take advantage of OC Transpo’s popular Sno-Bus service, which allows you to travel between Winterlude activities. The Sno-Bus will run on all Winterlude weekends: February 2-3, 9-10 and 16-17. Festival-goers over the age of 12 can obtain a special Sno-Bus day pass for only $2.50. Children 11 years and younger are invited to ride for free. Please note bus passes, transfers and bus tickets will not be accepted on the Sno-Bus. The Sno-Bus will serve all the sites along the Rideau
Canal to Dow’s Lake. For further transit information, call OC Transpo at

1921 Stittsville Main St. Meeting On Jan 28 a public meeting was held on the official plan amendment proposal for 1921 Stittsville Main St. This was a very well attended meeting, which brought out residents from the Upcountry subdivision and the estate lots. The proponent is requesting that the designation of the subject lands be changed from General Rural to General Urban Area in order to accommodate a future subdivision development of approximately 144 lots for single detached houses. Immediately north of the lands, a residential urban subdivision and to the south of the lands is an estate lot subdivision. The major concerns raised at the meeting focused on the negative impact that this development would have on the residents' quality of life. Residents were also concerned with the environmental and traffic impacts that this proposal would have on the existing homes. City staff are currently reviewing all comments and will
be preparing a recommendation to the City's Agriculture and Rural Affairs
Committee. For more information please contact my office and the City Planner,
Sally Switzer at 613-580-2424 x27597 or
Sally.Switzer@ottawa.ca. Kanata West Plan of Subdivision An application has been submitted for a subdivision and zoning by-law amendment for the residential development located at 5831 Hazeldean Rd. These lands are located in Kanata West, south of Maple Grove Road and north of Poole Creek. The property is situated between the Fairwinds south and the proposed Fairwinds West subdivision. The proposal aims to change the current zoning of Rural, Agriculture and Highway Commercial to Residential to allow for the development of single-detached homes, semi-detached homes, townhouses, an elementary school and a park. The applicant is proposing the construction of approximately 471 residential dwelling units. A public meeting will be held in the future on this development. The deadline to provide comments on this proposal is
February 13, 2008. For further questions or to submit your comments please
contact the City Planner: Sally Switzer at 613-580-2424 x27597 or

Home Water Filters The City of Ottawa has issued a warning regarding sales companies that have been targeting residents to test their tap water and to arrange a follow-up on-site visit. Some companies have stated that our City’s drinking water is contaminated and is not safe to consume. The City wishes to reassure residents that this is absolutely false and the sales of water filtration equipment are neither endorsed nor related to the City of Ottawa. The City would also like to reassure residents that drinking water is of high quality and does not require treatment such as the types being offered by door-to-door companies. Due to provincial regulations, the City will be visiting some residents in order to obtain water samples and test the quality. All of these visits will be made after a pre-arranged appointment has been scheduled. Please be assured that City staff will clearly identify themselves upon arrival with visible photo identification. For more information regarding Ottawa’s drinking water
supply and to view facts about treatment filters please call 311. “Your Safety … Shad’s Business” Campaign As a reminder, please submit your comments regarding my program, “Your Safety … Shad’s Business.” Last week I published the results of the program, which monitors speeding in our community, in my weekly column and on my website.
