What’s in a name?

I am hoping a name carries a storied history, a sense of belonging and, in the case of Ward 6, a better reflection of our community.

It has been proposed to change the name of our ward from ‘Stittsville-Kanata West’ to ‘Stittsville.’

I will be running a poll on my website to gauge public sentiment and I encourage all residents to voice their opinion.

If the votes from residents reflect a desire to change the name of the ward, I will discuss this with City Staff and make the necessary adjustments to ensure the name of our ward truly reflects the rich history of Stittsville and our village is properly honoured and remembered.

Please visit my website at www.shadqadri.com to register your vote.

Curbing speed concerns

On May 3, I launched a Slow Down project in the Granite Ridge community.

I hope residents heed caution when traveling throughout residential developments; it is important we protect the safety of our neighbours. Please drive carefully and respect the posted speed limits.

I will be doing similar speed surveys through the community in the coming weeks. If you have a concern about speeding on your street, and you would like my office to monitor the traffic, please contact my office by e-mail at shad.qadri@ottawa.ca or by phone at 613-580-2476 and we will set up a time.

Public meeting to discuss LRT

Just a reminder, the City will be holding an open house to allow residents to talk with west-end Councillors and City Staff about the City’s preferred Option 4 LRT proposal.

The event will take place on May 6 from 7-9pm at Holy Trinity Catholic High School at 180 Katimavik Rd. in Kanata.

Your feedback is essential as it is forms part of the planning process. I encourage all those interested to come out to this open house and discuss the transit option.

Comments from west-end residents only are due no later than May 14.

E-mail your comments to my office at shad.qadri@ottawa.ca  or to Colin Simpson, Planner, Transportation - Strategic Planning Unit, at colin.simpson@ottawa.ca.

Committee takes shape for public art gallery

Last week, I hosted a public meeting where interested artists and residents formed a committee to work towards having public space for community artwork in Stittsville.

There was a great dynamic of individuals who attended the meeting and I am glad a committee has been created.

The formal name of the committee is still up for debate and will be determined at the next meeting of the committee executive.

The group appointed resident and artist, Sue Perley-Robertson to chair the committee.

If you would like to be on the committee or receive future updates on this initiative please contact my office. You may also contact Sue Perley-Robertson directly at jessler@rogers.com or 613-836-7546.

I will continue to keep the community up-to-date on the committee's progress on my website, where you will be able to find information on the committee, meeting minutes and future meeting dates.

The committee is eager to meet again and move forward on organizing the available wall display space in the Goulbourn Recreation Complex expansion, which will be opening this fall, and then pursue further initiatives to have a gallery in Stittsville.

Retirees start a new chapter

Isn’t it ironic that when someone retires and time is no longer important, his colleagues generally present him with a watch?

I would like to extend my sincere thanks and congratulations to four local residents who have retired from the City of Ottawa.

Carlo D’angelo, Jane Joy, Dorothy McGinn and Gillis Munro were long-time public servants for the municipality, and their contributions have not gone overlooked.

It will be difficult for the City to fill the void they have left behind, but I am thankful we benefited from so many years of their service.

Thank you to each of the four of you, and to the many others who have retired this year.
Best of luck in your future endeavors, and enjoy your much-deserved retirement.

Local referees get the call

I am pleased to announce that two of our local hockey officials represented our community at the Telus Cup Midget AAA National Tournament in Arnprior.

Tom Sweeney, a referee, and Matt Gervais, a linesman, were chosen from approximately 80 officials along with 3 other referees and 7 other linesmen from the Ottawa area.

This is a tremendous feat for these two officials and I know the Stittsville Minor Hockey and the Stittsville Hockey Referee's Association are very honoured and proud.
