Have you sent your comments regarding the proposed landfill expansion?

With Waste Management (WM) submitting its Terms of Reference to the Ministry of Environment (MOE) regarding its proposal to expand the Carp Road Landfill, the public is urged to send their comments and concerns to the MOE regarding the expansion project.

I encourage all residents to voice their concerns regarding the project. It’s an issue that has been going on for years, and now it’s time again to stand up and unite as a community and oppose the expansion.

You can send your comments directly to Jeffrey Dea, Project Officer for Ministry of the Environment at jeffrey.dea@ontario.ca until July 19.

You can also visit my website, www.shadqadri.com for more information as well as subscribing to the Moving Mountains newsletter via email at moving.mountains@yahoo.ca or see their page on Facebook at www.facebook.com/mmnews. Seniors’ breakfast: A great start to Canada Day

Thank you to all of those who participated in my annual Seniors’ Canada Day breakfast. Once again, it was the perfect way to start Canada Day celebrations in our community.

More than 250 local residents packed the Stittsville fire hall to enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast provided Dave Smith, who owned Nate’s Delicatessen. Dave and his team make a special visit to Stittsville each year for Canada Day and once again, provided residents with a wonderful breakfast.

The Schmodkas, a local singing troupe comprised of four talented ladies from right here in Stittsville, returned to provide the entertainment. They have done a wonderful job in the past and I wanted to bring them back again.

A big thank you to our local volunteer firefighters who not only opened their doors for the event, but also generously assisted in ensuring the morning ran smoothly. Their commitment and dedication to our community is unparalleled.

Thank you once again to all of those who helped make this a great morning

Canada Day celebrations in Stittsville

I want to thank and congratulate Metin Akgun and the rest of the members of the Stittsville Village Association (SVA) and its team of volunteers for organizing the celebrations of Canada’s 143rd birthday in Stittsville.

The event is geared for families, and it was great to see so many young families, some familiar and some new to our community, that came out and enjoyed a full day of activities.

The community came out to celebrate in huge numbers on such a gorgeous day. It was a wonderful turnout as it is every year. The community really came out and showed pride for their Nation. The fireworks, as per usual, capped off a great day and were once again terrific to watch.

The SVA is always looking for volunteers for the yearly celebration, and if you are interested, I encourage you to contact Mr. Akgun, the president of the SVA at aysemetin@rogers.com for more information.

Council approves Lansdowne Live plan

On June 28 after a lengthy discussion at the Council table, Ottawa City Council approved the Lansdowne Live proposal in a 15-9 vote. This margin was the same when Council initially approved the proposal, in principal, last November.

The Lansdowne Park issue has been one that has been discussed and debated for years and it was time for this Council to move on and make a decision regarding what to do with this vacant piece of land. With such a rich history and so much potential, it was important to move ahead.

There are those who see both ends of the spectrum with what this project will or won’t bring, but if we were to defer this decision, it would just be delaying this process even more and in that case, when would a decision be made? It was crucial that we make a decision and we did.

Now we can look forward to the next steps leading up to what has the potential of leaving a legacy for our great city. The rejuvenated Lansdowne plan has the ability to bring back rich sports history in Ottawa and be an attraction and destination for people.
