Dear residents,
One Cent NOW! Campaign
The City of Ottawa has joined forces with over 30
municipalities across the country and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities
in an effort to make more cents of your tax dollars.
Our City has joined Toronto’s One Cent NOW! Campaign,
which is calling on the federal government to return one cent of the GST tax on
every dollar back to Canadian municipalities. This campaign would see a return
of approximately $140 million, which would help fund our City’s key services,
programs and infrastructure.
I encourage you to lend your support to this campaign by
filling out the online petition. To access this Citywide petition and for more
information on the One Cent NOW! Campaign please visit my website at

Odour Update
Last week I met with Waste Management staff at their Carp
Road landfill to discuss our community’s concerns.
In particular I wanted to view the operations of their
on-site weather monitoring system and also discuss the reasoning behind the
unsubstantiated odour complaints outlined in the company’s report.
During this meeting, it was explained to me that several
of the odour complaints were deemed erroneous for a number of reasons including
lack of information, wind direction and odours emanating from sources other than
the Carp Road landfill.
As a follow-up to this meeting, I have requested that
Waste Management participate in a public meeting in our community to provide
everyone with an overview of this report and the opportunity to ask questions.
Also, this would be a great opportunity for our community to learn more about
which efforts are being made by Waste Management to reduce odours from their
landfill site.
I thank all of you for your interest in this issue and for
staying involved in a respectful and intelligent manner. Please be assured I
will inform you as this process continues. It is important that we continue to
work together to demand better for our community.
Firefighters March
On Sept. 7 thousands of people will gather in downtown
Ottawa to pay tribute to firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty
last year.
The Sixth Annual Ottawa Firefighters March and Memorial
Service will kick off with a parade commencing at the Museum of Nature on Elgin
Street at 11:30 a.m. The Memorial Service is being held at Festival Plaza,
located on the grounds of City Hall at 12 p.m. As Vice Chair of the Community
and Protective Services Committee, it is a great honour to take part in this
sod-turning ceremony, which will officially kick off the construction of a
memorial monument for City of Ottawa Firefighters.
I invite anyone who is interested to visit City Hall for
this special event and honour those individuals who keep all Ottawa residents
safe.
Transportation Summit
Last week I attended the Mayor’s Eastern Ontario and
Western Quebec Transit Summit.
Over 30 municipal leaders participated in the Mayor’s
Summit and signed a memorandum in support of a rail system, which would link
Ottawa with surrounding municipalities. This Summit was based on some of the
findings from the Mayor’s Task Force on Transportation. I feel this is a great
step forward in enhancing transportation for all Ottawa residents. For more
information on the future of our City’s transit system please visit
