Stittsville Village Association AGM Nov. 15

The Stittsville Village Association (SVA) has had another busy year, and next week you will have the opportunity to hear more about their work and find out how you can get involved.

On Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. the SVA is hosting their Annual General Meeting at the Goulbourn Municipal Building, located at 2135 Huntley Road. I encourage you to attend and have your say on how we can strengthen and improve our community.

During this meeting, the SVA will present their Annual Report summarizing issues they have addressed over the past year including social events, environmental issues, growth and development and transportation concerns. In addition to this, amendments to the SVA Constitution will be discussed and election of officers for the coming year will take place.

The SVA is always looking for new volunteers on their executive and this is a great opportunity for residents to contribute and meet new people in our community. I look forward to attending and hope to see many new faces out in support of this great community association.

Traffic Lights Up at Hazeldean/Main

Road enhancements were recently completed at the intersection of Stittsville Main Street and Hazeldean Road.

These enhancements have been made to better service the existing community of Stittsville and also the new residential and commercial development of Jackson Trails. I am pleased that this project has come to a close, as these changes will surely increase safety for both motorists and pedestrians in our community.

Included in the new modifications are the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Stittsville Main Street and Hazeldean Road and the construction of sidewalks in a variety of locations making it easier for people to safely cross over to the new Jackson Trails Plaza.

Thank you to everyone for your patience during the construction period.

Outdoor Rinks

With the winter months just around the corner, volunteers across the City are being encouraged to help maintain the many outdoor rinks Ottawa has to offer.

Some of the duties included in this commitment are maintaining facilities and equipment, establishing base ice, daily maintenance including scraping and flooding ice surfaces, snow removal, responding to public requests and first aid if necessary.

In our community we currently have many outdoor rinks at a number of locations including Ralph Street Park, Bell Street Park, A Lorne Cassidy Elementary School, Bryanston Gate Park, Cypress Gardens Park and Crossing Bridge Park.

If you are interested in becoming a community outdoor rink operator, please contact the City of Ottawa Seasonal Recreation Office at 613-580-2590 to obtain an application package. Please note that the deadline for application submissions is Nov. 31, 2007.

Plan of Subdivision

The applicant has submitted a plan of subdivision for their residential development located at 1560, 1620 and 1636 Maple Grove Rd.

This proposed subdivision is located in Kanata West, south of Maple Grove Rd, east of Mattamy's Fairwinds Subdivision and north of the proposed commercial development on Hazeldean Rd. Zoning for this land will take place in the New Year.

There are approximately 1200 to 1400 dwelling units being proposed which will consist of single detached, townhouses and multiple unit (stacked) dwellings. For more information please contact my office.

Halloween Fun

As your Councillor, I had a wonderful time celebrating Halloween with so many people in our community this year.

I would like to thank the Saunders family for giving me the opportunity to read a ghost story to some children at their world famous Farm, in Munster.

A very appreciative thank you is extended to the organizers of the Stittsville Haunt who collected over 1000 pounds of food and an approximate $600 for the Ottawa Food Bank. I applaud Bruce Evely and his family for this amazing effort on behalf of our community.

I also hosted my first Halloween in my ward office. Thank you to everyone who attended both events, it was great to see all of the little ghouls and goblins in our community

This past weekend another successful fundraiser took place at City Hall. Mayor O’Brien hosted Trick or Treat with the Mayor in support of the Ottawa Food Bank’s Baby Supply Cupboard. Thank you to everyone who contributed to these great events held in our community and across the City.

Ward Council

My Ward Council meeting scheduled for Nov. 13 has been cancelled and will resume in the New Year. Please continue to watch my column and website for updates on our actions moving forward.

Ben Durocher

Last month one very talented Stittsville resident was recognized as one of the top ten young performers in the country.

Ben Durocher was one of the featured actors, dancers and singers in CBC’s Triple Sensation show. Congratulations to Ben who has displayed such talent and entertained our community on many occasions over the years.
