Shad’s Squad Takes to the Streets This Week
This week my staff and I will be doing our part to ensure Stittsville-Kanata
West stays beautiful for everyone to enjoy.
We registered as a team for the City’s 2nd Annual Fall Cleaning the Capital and
on Oct. 12 we will be picking up litter south bound on Main Street from
Hazeldean Road. Many thanks to the teams of residents who have already
participated in clean up projects throughout our community.
Fall Cleaning the Capital wraps up on Oct. 15 but there are still many
opportunities to get involved in helping to keep our community clean. I
encourage you to continue to respect our environment by placing all litter in
garbage bins and ensure the proper items are recycled and kept out of our City’s
landfills.
The City’s Spring Cleaning the Capital will be taking place in April 2008.
Please be assured I will keep the community informed on how and when to register
for this great initiative.
CLC
Waste Management has formed a Community Liaison Committee (CLC) in an effort to
provide an avenue for the company to communicate with members of the community
regarding operations at the Carp Road landfill.
Councillor Eli El-Chantiry and I have been invited to be a part of this
committee, which is comprised of WM staff, members of the Coalition, a
representative from the Ministry of Environment.
The committee will also include a membership of three to five residents from the
communities surrounding the site and it is anticipated that the CLC will meet a
minimum of every three months.
This is a good opportunity for all of us to provide input and suggestions to
Waste Management. You are encouraged to submit your resume including a brief
summary of your interest in the Carp Road facility through my office at
shad.qadri@ottawa.ca.
Trick or Treat With Mayor O’Brien
Ghouls and Goblins of all ages are invited to visit City Hall for a great
evening of fun Halloween festivities on Oct. 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The Heritage Building at City Hall, located at 110 Laurier Ave. W, will be
transformed into a haunted house and it is sure to be a fun holiday event with
entertainment and treats for the entire family.
All members of the community are encouraged to attend this event, hosted by City
of Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien, in support of the Ottawa Food Bank’s Baby Supply
Cupboard. Admission is free but you are encouraged to bring any non-perishable
food and baby items donations.
Halloween in Stittsville
When you’re bringing your children trick-or-treating on Halloween night don’t
forget to stop by my ward office, located at 1532 Main Street.
I will be at the office that evening handing out treats and offering up some fun
surprises as well. Please see my column next week for further details on this
event.
TREE Program
The City of Ottawa TREE Program is now accepting registrations for Spring 2008.
This program has seen great success since its launch this past Spring. The City
has set the goal of planting 100,000 trees in our urban and rural forests over
the next four years.
The objectives of this program are to encourage stewardship through assistance
with tree planting projects, provide forestry outreach education, recognize
excellence in arboriculture initiatives, create sponsorship opportunities and to
create partnerships with the community.
The City of Ottawa will be providing trees for residents to plant on their own
properties and also on City owned properties throughout the community. There
will be a wide variety of species but this is dependant upon availability and
will be given out on a first come, first serve basis. Each tree comes with a
suggested location to plant and specific instructions.
This is a great opportunity for local organizations to actively recruit
volunteers and work together to beautify our local parks and other green spaces
throughout our community. TREE Program Community Grants will also be available
for the greening of non-city owned property, rehabilitation projects and
schoolyard greening.
For information on how to apply for one of these grants please call 613-580-2424
ext. 1TREE (18733), email TREE@ottawa.ca or contact 3-1-1. Also please continue
to watch my website (www.shadqadri.com)
for updates on this exciting new program.
Draft Comprehensive Zoning By-law
The City of Ottawa's Planning and Environment Committee will be holding the
final public hearings on the draft Comprehensive Zoning By-law for the urban
area on October 22 and 23 in the Champlain Room at City Hall.
The City has been working towards the harmonization of the 36 zoning by-laws in
the City of Ottawa from former municipalities, which existed prior to
amalgamation into one new Comprehensive Zoning By-law. The public is encouraged
to provide comments the new proposed By-law which can be viewed on the City of
Ottawa website at ottawa.ca or at a Client Service Centre. There will also be an
open house on this topic on October 11 from 6 - 9 p.m. at the Festival Room,
City Hall, 110 Laurier Ave. W.
To register to speak to the Planning and Environment Committee on October 22 or
23 please contact the committee co-coordinator, Rob Tremblay at 613-580-2424
ext. 28828 or Rob.Tremblay@ottawa.ca.
