NEWS ARCHIVESJanuary 5, 2007 Thirty-day public comment period on Recently Waste Management (WM) took the next step in their proposal to expand their Carp Road landfill. Earlier this week, the company submitted their Terms of Reference (ToR’s) to the Ministry of Environment with the intent of expanding their landfill to three times its current size. The formal submission date is set for Jan. 12 leaving the community with only 30 days to draft their response and comment on the document. Ward-6 Stittsville-Kanata West Councillor Shad Qadri stands firm on his commitment to lead the fight against the proposed expansion. “I have always been opposed to a landfill expansion on the Carp Road site and will continue to work towards a better solution,” he says. “It is time to stop landfilling our waste and rise to the challenge of implementing new technologies to better serve our entire city.” Qadri urges all Ottawa residents to recognize the significance of this citywide issue. “It is extremely important for people to realize this proposal is not just a local issue but one that affects us all,” he says. “We as a city have no choice but to work together to create a long-term, sustainable plan to deal with our solid waste.” Qadri applauds residents who have worked tirelessly to oppose the expansion through a number of initiatives over the past year. Last March a Coalition of citizens, comprised of volunteers from the community, submitted a five-volume response to WM’s draft Terms of References. The document included over 165 recommendations on items that must be considered during the Environmental Assessment of the site and over 2,500 comments from the community. “We are now gearing up to once again comment on the final document and see if Waste Management has taken into consideration the recommendations previously made by the community,” says Qadri. “I will work with my community, my colleagues and city staff to review the ToR's and create an effective response.” |
