Official Plan review: Have your say

The City’s Official Plan is set for review, and a meeting for west-end residents has been scheduled to allow for public comment on the direction the City should take in respect to future growth.

Planning, Transit and the Environment staff will be in attendance at this meeting to provide a presentation on the proposed revisions to the City's Official Plan.

Please join me at this important meeting on June 16 beginning at 7p.m. at the Mlacak Centre, Halls A & B, located at 2500 Campeau Dr, Kanata.

It is important for the public to get involved in the Official Plan review as it directly affects the development in our community.

One of the major issues for our community is how the City's Official Plan defines infill and compatibility. Currently, the definitions of infill and compatibility are very vague and left to individual interpretation. I will urge the City to make proper definitions for these terms.

I encourage residents to submit comments on the Official Plan review. Please send your comments to my office at shad.qadri@ottawa.ca and to plan@ottawa.ca.

For further information, please visit the City’s website at: http://ottawa.ca/residents/public_consult/beyond_2020/index_en.html.

Park Party a great success

I would like to thank everyone who attended my very first Park Party this past weekend at Village Square Park.

It was great seeing so many families and community members come together to celebrate the summer and soak up the spirit of Stittsville.

Between the special guests in attendance, the entertainers and the information provided from City Staff, this was a fantastic event and I am glad so many residents took the time out of their schedule to take a moment and spend time with their friends and neighbours.

I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to Stephen Lewis and members of the Canadian Beef Farmer’s Association for assisting with the festivities and grilling up a terrific BBQ.

I would also like to thank the Mayor, members of Council and City Staff who took time out of their busy schedules to take part in the event.

The entertainment was fantastic and I am sure everyone really enjoyed themselves – even if there were some slithery snakes in attendance!

I look forward to making this an annual event and really growing the community spirit in Stittsville.

Tracking our ecological footprint

Another step has been made toward the fight against climate change.

The City has teamed up with Zerofootprint to launch Zerofootprint Ottawa, a new tool designed to help Ottawa residents fight climate change.

Zerofootprint Ottawa is an interactive website that lets residents, businesses, neighbourhoods and community groups measure, track and reduce their carbon footprint.

The partnership provides free access to a web-based Carbon Calculator.

The website encourages partnerships and competition towards reducing Ottawa’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The community-wide initiative engages individuals and organizations in the fight against climate change and provides information and services that help residents take action to combat global warming.

Engaging citizens in cities across North America, and around the world, is an important part of a global solution.

The partnership adds no cost to the City as the cost of the Web tool is covered under sponsorship from private organizations.

This tool allows Ottawa residents and businesses help Council meet its initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent below 1990 levels by 2012.

Canada Day registration for seniors

I would like to remind the seniors of our community to please contact my office and register for our annual Canada Day breakfast.

Due to a closure at the Stittsville Arena, our annual Seniors Canada Day breakfast has been moved to the Fire Hall on Stittsville Main Street. The volunteer fire department has generously opened their doors and invited us in and the gesture is greatly appreciated.

While the location has changed, the service, food and warm hospitality will stay the same. Nate’s Delicatessen will be on hand to provide yet another delicious breakfast.

Please mark your calendars and join me for a tremendous breakfast to celebrate our nation’s birthday.

Space is limited, so please contact my office at 613-580-2476 to reserve your spot.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Stittsville gets creative

The artistic side of our community was on display this past weekend during Art in the Park at Village Square Park.

This was a tremendous opportunity for the artists in our community to showcase their talents to the public and to allow residents a chance to interact with the people behind the art.

As an art gallery becomes more of a reality in our community, I look forward to seeing this program etch out a niche in Stittsville and the arts community truly embraced.

Those wiley coyotes

I have been made aware of coyote sightings in the field between Echowoods and the Jackson Trails subdivision.

Coyotes have adjusted well to living near towns and farms and occasionally within cities.

The Ontario SPCA has developed a fact sheet titled “Living With Coyotes,” which includes guidelines on deterring coyotes from residential properties.

I encourage concerned residents to review the fact sheet in order to safeguard your property, and to better understand the precautionary measures necessary in the event of a coyote sighting.

The fact sheet can be obtained by visiting the City’s website at: http://ottawa.ca/residents/rural_connections/livestock/wildlife_en.html.
