Dear residents,

Recycling Initiative Set For Grand Opening

On Sept. 15 during the Grand Opening of my ward office, you will also have the opportunity to support recycling in our community.

Nicole Colbeck will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at my new ward office, located at 1532 Stittsville Main Street, to present her Everybody Wins: Computer Recycling Program. This program is the result of a partnership formed between Heartwood House, a unique organization that houses 16 charitable organizations under the same roof, and RD Long Computers Ltd, an electronics salvage company. I encourage you to drop off your electronic donations to help support the incredible work Heartwood House does right across the Ottawa community.

This is an opportunity for you to discard of any computer towers, mice, modems, speakers, monitors, desktops, printers, keyboards, hard drives, lap tops, cables, cd/dvd roms and LCD monitors. This is a great way to clear your houses of clutter and also help divert waste out of our City’s landfills. Please note that a recycling fee of $20 will apply to all CRT (traditional style) computer monitors.

My staff and I are excited to celebrate the Grand Opening of my new ward office and looking forward to serving all of you in this new accessible location. It is my goal to provide service during hours that are convenient for you.

I have established that we will be open every Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and every Wednesday and Friday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please provide our office with feedback on these hours so they can be adjusted if necessary to suit your needs. Please note that my City Hall office will remain open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Back to School

I would like to take this opportunity to wish students in our community a safe and happy first week back at school.

With the approval of the City of Ottawa 2007 Budget came funding for the addition of nine adult crossing guard locations across the City. I am pleased that the intersection of Harry Douglas Drive and Sweetnam Drive will have a new adult crossing guard for Stittsville Public School students. Our new adult crossing guard will be ensuring children are safe while crossing the road every school day from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Your Safety…Shad’s Business

Given the incredible feedback and participation from our community, I have decided to extend my speed-monitoring program into the month of November. It has been great to have residents join me as I have implemented this program throughout the summer months. With fall just around the corner, streets in our community are getting busier and continuing my program is a good opportunity to raise awareness of the issue and encourage people to practice safe driving habits.

Please note that I will not be out as often as I have been over the summer due to our busy fall schedule at City Hall for committee and Council meetings.

Transportation Connections for Kanata West

Along with the home developers of Fairwinds and Jackson Trails, I am hosting a meeting on the transportation networks for Kanata West and will be focusing on two items. The first is the possible closure of sections of Johnwoods and the second is the Stittsville Main Street extension to Maple Grove.

I encourage you to join us and discuss these transportation networks on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic High School Library, 5870 Abbott Street. For more information please contact my office.

Timbermere Hydro Corridor

I am holding a meeting with residents to discuss the maintenance of the hydro corridor in the Timbermere Subdivision. City staff along with myself are proposing a naturalization option as a viable long-term permanent solution for the Timbermere hydro corridor.

I encourage residents to attend this meeting to discuss naturalizing the hydro corridor on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Pretty Street Community Centre, 2 Pretty Street.
