Congratulations to Community Volunteers

We have many dedicated volunteers in our community and I am pleased to announce that two of them have been recognized for their outstanding efforts.

Congratulations to Helene Rivest and Michael Justinich who are both recipients of the United Way/ Centraide Community Builder Awards.

Helene was recognized for her work with Big Brothers Big Sisters and for speaking to schools about the benefit of volunteering. Helene also has a rich history of volunteering in the community of Stittsville with several organizations including the Stittsville Village Association, Stittsville Food Bank and a local senior’s residence.

Michael serves as Co-Chair of the Next Generation Board at the United Way/Centraide Ottawa and works as a Business Analyst for Crime Prevention Ottawa and has also supported a variety of local fundraising events.
I have had the opportunity to work with both Helene and Michael and I am pleased to see them honoured for their continuous work in our community and across the City.
In addition to receiving these awards, both recipients’ names will be engraved on the United Way/Centraide Wall of Inspiration at City Hall, which is a great tribute to both Helene and Michael.

Green Box Challenge

Last week the City’s Solid Waste Services issued a challenge to local high schools in an effort to help increase education and promote the curbside organics program.

The Green Bin High School Challenge is calling on students to create advertisements through posters, tv and radio to educate the public on the program and waste diversion. All area high schools have been sent promotional packages and the City has requested that teachers make this challenge a part of their curriculum.

There are great prizes for the first place winners in each category and gift certificates for the second place winners. The deadline to register for the challenge is Jan. 18, 2008 and all entries must be submitted by no later than Feb. 18, 2008. For more information on this program please visit www.ottawa.ca/greenbinchallenge.

This residential curbside organics collection program is set to begin in 2009 and will allow us to place kitchen scraps and a variety of organic materials into a separate box for composting

This program will compost approximately 100,000 each year of organic materials that would normally end up in our City’s landfills. Items such as food scraps, dairy and meat products, kitty litter, sawdust, soiled paper and cardboard will be placed in a green bin and brought to a processing plant.

Support Food Bank

During the busy holiday season, it is important that we lend our support to families in need.

I encourage you to make a donation to the Stittsville Food Bank as they enter their busiest season and work to stock up on non-perishable food items for the winter months. There are several ways to contribute and help your neighbours enjoy a wonderful holiday meal.

Brown’s Independent Grocer has a Hamper Tree, which makes it very easy for all of us to donate food items. The tree, located at the front of the store, is adorned with pictures of items to donate such as a turkey or canned vegetables. You simply choose an item and pay for it at the cash and in turn, it will be donated to the Food Bank.

Also, there are a variety of local churches, businesses, organizations and schools holding food drives in our community. I have a donation box at my ward office, located at 1532 Stittsville Main Street, year-round and you are welcome to make your donation there during our office hours of Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and every Wednesday from 1 p.m., to 8 p.m.

If you have any questions regarding the Stittsville Food Bank or need their assistance please call 613-831-0451 and leave a message and a volunteer will get back to you.
Thank you to the volunteers who run the Stittsville Food Bank and ensure no one in our community goes hungry.

Mayor’s Christmas

Festival Plaza at City Hall will be transformed into Santa’s Village this weekend and I encourage all of you to join me and celebrate the holiday season.

Mayor Larry O’Brien is hosting the Seventh Annual Christmas Celebration, which will include live entertainment, a visit with Santa, horse-drawn sleigh rides, the lighting of the Christmas tree, hot chocolate and BeaverTails.

It is requested that you please bring a non-perishable food donation for the Ottawa Food Bank to be entered to win a Senators gift package or a Bell gift package. If you would like a pass to the Mayor’s Christmas event, please drop by my ward office, located at 1532 Stittsville Main Street. For more information on this event please visit www.ottawa.ca or contact my office at 613-580-2476.

Official Plan Amendment Proposal

The proponent is requesting that the designation of the subject lands, located at 1921 Stittsville Main Street, which is approximately 19 hectares be changed from General Rural to General Urban Area.

This request is being made to accommodate a future subdivision development of approximately 144 lots for single detached houses. Immediately north of the lands is the residential Upcountry subdivision and to the south of the lands is the estate lot subdivision.

The deadline for comments on this proposal is December 20, 2007. For further questions or to submit your comments please contact the City Planner, Sally Switzer at 613-580-2424 ext. 27597 or sally.switzer@ottawa.ca.

Snow Clearing Help

With the winter months ahead of us, there are many people in our community who are in need of assistance with shovelling their laneways.

This is a great opportunity for students to acquire community service hours and I encourage you to contact my office and we will put you in touch with those who are in need of extra help this season.
