Incredible Fundraiser in Stittsville This Weekend

The Stittsville Stallions and Stittsville Stampede will be suiting up in pink uniforms for a great cause this weekend.

On Jan. 12 the Second Annual Pink at the Rink fundraiser is being held in support of Breast Cancer Action, a charity that offers financial support for women who have been diagnosed with the disease.

The event is taking place at the Stittsville and District Community Centre, located at 10 Warner Colpitts Lane, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and I encourage all of you to stop by for this heart-warming fundraiser.

In addition to watching some great hockey, you will also have the opportunity to bid on hockey memorabilia in the silent auction and support many women and their families dealing with breast cancer. Thank you to organizers Peter and Theresa Lefebvre for this amazing initiative.

Great Work by Police

Congratulations to West Division Superintendent Ralph Erfle and his team of dedicated officers who have found that virtually no criminal incidents were reported in the west end during the last week of December.

This is a rare occurrence but I think it truly speaks to the excellent teamwork of our District Investigators, local officers, community police officers and Neighbourhood Watch volunteers.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Constable Ryan Strottman, our new Community Police Centre Officer, who has recently taken on the role of offering crime prevention programs and support to the communities of Stittsville and Kanata. We look forward to working with you to help keep our community safe. At this time I would also like to thank Diane Allard, and wish her well as she leaves our community after three years of dedication.

Did You Know?

Although it is common knowledge that drivers must signal and move to the right when an emergency vehicle has its red lights flashing, you should also be aware that the same practice must be applied to vehicles with green flashing lights.

When you see a green flashing light that is our volunteer firefighters responding to a call in our community and it is imperative that you pull over as close as you can to the right edge of the road and ensure all intersections are kept clear.

Our community is fortunate to have a great team of volunteer firefighters led by Rural Sector Fire Chief Terry Gervais. These men and women generously give their time and talents to ensure our community is kept safe and on behalf of our community, I thank them for their ongoing dedication.

I have had several opportunities to attend events held by the volunteer firefighters and most recently enjoyed a wonderful holiday meal with the volunteers and their families. Throughout the year, they hold a number of great events and work with a variety of organizations in our community. I encourage you to get involved by either supporting this great team or getting further information on how to become a volunteer firefighter.
For more information please contact Station 81 by dropping by at their location1641 Stittsville Main Street or by phone at 613-836-3337.

Stittsville Library Events

There are always many great opportunities for learning and entertainment at the Stittsville Library. I encourage you to take advantage of this excellent service in our community.

On Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. the branch is hosting a reporter information night featuring guest speaker Donna Casey who is a journalist with the Ottawa Sun. Although this presentation is aimed at teens age 13 and up, library staff encourage anyone who is interested in the newspaper industry to attend. To register please drop by the Stittsville Library, located at 1637 Stittsville Main St. or by phone at 613-836-3381.

There are also ongoing programs that run on a weekly basis at the library including Babytime for newborns to 17 months at 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Toddlertime every Tuesday at 11:15 a.m. for ages 18 months to 35 months. Both programs run for 30 minutes each and include games, stories, songs and rhymes.

Every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. the Library hosts Storytime for children ages 3 to 5. This program also runs for 30 minutes and includes longer stories and a craft. There is no registration required for the weekly programs and you are encouraged to stop by to participate any time you are available.

Etta St. Restrictions

Residents of Etta Street have requested restricting entrances to their street from Stittsville Main Street and Fernbank Road in order to eliminate cut through traffic in the area.

I encourage all members of the community to comment on this possible restriction. You can comment on this by contacting my office at 613-580-2476 or by email at shad.qadri@ottawa.ca Please ensure all comments are submitted to my office by Jan. 31, 2008. Further information is available on my website at www.shadqadri.com

Congratulations Stallions

Congratulations to the Stittsville Stallions who beat out 38 other teams to win the Pewee House A title at the Bell Capital Cup.

I am so proud to see our community represented by such talented, young athletes at the world’s largest hockey tournament.

Stittsville Food Bank

Thanks to your generosity, the Stittsville Food Bank was able to provide Christmas dinners to 63 families in our community.

Thank you to the many people who made both financial and food donations and to the many individuals, schools, churches and local businesses who held food drives throughout the holiday season. I must also commend the dedicated volunteers at the Food Bank who give so much of their time to ensure no families in our community go hungry.

The Stittsville Food Bank is always in need of assistance and in particular, volunteers are looking to stock up on snacks such as granola bars and juice boxes for children to bring to school. Please continue to donate items at my ward office, located at 1532 Stittsville Main Street and the bin at Brown's Independent Grocer. If you need assistance or have any other inquiries please contact the Stittsville Food Bank at 613-831-0451 and make sure to leave a message and one of the volunteers will get back to you as soon as possible.
