Community raises concerns over Carp River Floodplain

Concern has been raised regarding the Carp River Sub-Watershed study done for Kanata West developments.

City staff is further reviewing this matter to determine if there are discrepancies in the study. To address the concerns raised regarding the Carp River Floodplain Environmental Assessment, the City will have this reviewed by an independent third party.

I am hoping to resolve this as soon as possible; however, this may cause the postponement of some developments proposed adjacent to the Carp River until the City has resolved this matter.

Please be assured this does not affect the Fairwinds development by Mattamy Homes, as this subdivision is located outside the Carp River regulatory floodplain.

I am committed to working with city staff, my council colleagues and the developers to rectify the situation and ensure all concerns are assessed prior to development.

Please contact my office any time if you have any comments or concerns regarding this issue. Look for future updates in upcoming columns as they become available.

Extension of Huntmar Drive opens

I am very pleased to announce the long awaited Huntmar Drive extension opened to traffic on Feb. 6.

This road expansion should help alleviate traffic issues on other roads in our community. The newly opened road runs through the Mattamy subdivision and continues south to connect to Hazeldean Road.

With this opening the OC Transpo route 163 will return to planned operations in the Fairwinds subdivision and will no longer use Johnwoods Street.

I would also like to thank the community for your understanding in awaiting the opening of the Huntmar Drive extension. I know it has been a long and arduous process and I appreciate your patience.

I would like to thank all staff that assisted in the opening of this road. An official road opening ceremony will be taking place in the future.

Mattamy University

Last week I attended one of the sessions of Mattamy University with residents moving into the Fairwinds Subdivision in Kanata West.

It was a pleasure to meet new residents joining our community and existing residents who are moving into this development.

I want to thank Mattamy Homes for organizing this meeting to provide valuable information to their new homeowners.

I greatly appreciated being invited to this meeting and being provided the opportunity to speak to these residents.

Revised weekday OC Transpo schedule

For those in our ward who commute using public transit, please be aware that starting on Feb. 18, OC Transpo will have a revised schedule for weekday high-frequency routes and Transitway routes. Commuter express buses, school trips and rural express routes will not be affected.

As a result, there will be a slight increase in waiting times during peak-periods. The schedule revision should last until the end of March.

Please check www.octranspo.com for schedule changes.

Shopping centre site plan – comments due

The applicant has submitted a site plan proposal for a commercial development at 613 and 5585 Hazeldean Road located in Kanata West on the north side of Hazeldean Road and west of the Carp River.

This proposal is to permit a shopping centre development on this site, which will have a total gross floor area of 37,581 sq. m. made up of 11 freestanding commercial buildings. The deadline to provide comments on this proposal is Feb. 21.

For further questions or to submit your comments please contact the City Planner: Kalle Hakala at 613-580-2424 ext. 16228 or Kalle.Hakala@ottawa.ca.

Family Day

I would like to remind all residents that Family Day is just around the corner, occurring on Feb. 18.

This is an opportunity to spend time with family and loved ones.

City Hall and all six Client Service Centres will be closed that day. As well, OC Transpo will be running a revised schedule. Please visit www.octranspo.com for your bus route information. There will also be no curbside garbage pick-up and all libraries will be closed. However, all city-run recreation facilities will be running regular schedules and programs.

Go green with environmental funding

The City has created a great initiative for non-profit organizations looking to improve our environment. Funding is available through the Community Environmental Project Grants Program (CEPGP).

The purpose of the program is to help the city meet its environmental objectives in areas of sustainable development, solid-waster diversion, air quality and more environmentally pressing issues.

I encourage all neighbourhood groups and non-profit organizations in our community to take advantage of this initiative and help improve the Stittsville-Kanata West area. It’s a fantastic opportunity to really make a difference to our environment.

Information on the program and grant application forms can be found at www.ottawa.ca and following the links: residents/funding/community environmental projects grant.

Information can also be obtained by contacting Onno Gaanderse with the city’s Environmental Sustainability Division at 580-2424, extension 13364.

The deadline date for applications is Friday, April 4, 2008.
