NEWS ARCHIVESApril 9, 2010 Unacceptable power disruptions Recently Stittsville has experienced an unacceptable number of power outages throughout the community. I have been in continual contact with Hydro Ottawa staff and have requested senior staff provide a full explanation of the outages and action plan to prevent them. For all residents this is a great inconvenience for all residents and businesses including home based businesses. I understand that even a short outage can drastically affect the community with the possible loss of computer information and delays in the restoration of computer, phone systems and other electronic devices. I would like to thank the residents for their patience and understanding. When more information is available I will share it with the community. Fernbank community district park location change On June 24, 2009, City Council approved the Fernbank Community Design Plan (CDP) for the proposed development of 674 hectares of land between Fernbank and Hazeldean roads. When fully constructed, the community could contain up to 11,000 residences, 2,650 jobs and 31,000 residents. Included in the plan is a large district park to service the new and surrounding communities. At one time the consultant recommended a location within the triangle adjacent to the two existing Hydro Corridors directly north of the Trans Canada Trail (TCT). Given the shape and limited access to this location, I supported the City staff recommendation for the alternate and ultimately approved square shaped location located along two collector roads and north of the TCT. The approved park location was on land primarily owned by Mattamy Homes who did not support the park location and appealed the City’s decision to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB). This City has been advised that Mattamy Homes (in opposition to the City and Richcraft) was successful in having the district park moved largely off their land and onto the triangle adjacent to the Hydro Corridor. The key factor in the decision of the Board Member appears to have been the policies in the City’s Official Plan and Greenspace Master Plan that speak to linking parks to pathways and hydro corridors. The Board was also influenced by the policies that speak to using hydro corridors for recreational purposes and felt that a park next to two hydro corridors would have greater potential than one that was adjacent to one. Jackson Trails Blasting The developers of the Jackson Trails subdivision are preparing to open another phase with the construction of Denali Way, Wrangler Circle and Tony George Place located between Stittsville Main Street and Alon Street. This work will require blasting to install underground services. My office has been advised the blasting will occur during daylight hours over the next few of weeks. If you have concerns about the blasting please contact the consultants for the developers M-Roc at 1-613-634-2494 or Tartan Land Development 613-238-2040 ext. 276. Join the City’s Spring Cleaning the Capital Team The annual Spring Cleaning the Capital Campaign starts on April 15. I invite you to get involved to give our city a clean sweep this spring. With your help, Stittsville can be the cleanest ward in the City and once again claim the City prize for the highest participation rate. A record 87,400 participants made Cleaning the Capital 2009 the most successful campaign to date. It’s easy to take part. All you have to do is select a cleanup location where litter or graffiti has accumulated over the winter months. It can be a park, pathway, schoolyard or any public property requiring tidying up. Once you’ve chosen your cleanup location, you can register online at www.ottawa.ca/clean. The campaign runs from April 15 to May 15. Cleanup Starter Kits for litter pickup and/or graffiti removal projects are available to all registered volunteers. This year, the starter kits can be picked up at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex. When you register your group for this event, please be sure to click the GRC for pick-up of the starter kit. Together we can help keep Ottawa – and our community – clean, green, graffiti-free and litter-free. For more information and to register, visit www.ottawa.ca/clean.
