Councillor Qadri launching unique speeding program
in Stittsville this weekend

With many residents raising concerns with speeding in his community, Stittsville-Kanata West Councillor Shad Qadri has decided to take matters into his own hands.

Your Safety…Shad’s Business, the Councillor’s new speed-monitoring program, is set to kick off on Saturday, May 12 at 1 p.m. on the corner of Main and Abbott Streets in Stittsville. Councillor Qadri recently purchased a radar gun from his office budget, which he will use to monitor an approximate 30 hot spots in Stittsville during the summer months.

“I was motivated to start this program because several residents have requested changes to speed limits, additions of traffic lights and stop signs on a variety of streets in our community,” says Councillor Qadri. “Before any of these changes are made, I feel it is important to gather my own information and decide which areas require further enhancements. I am also hoping this program will help lighten the workload for the police and our City’s traffic department.”

The community of Stittsville will have use of the speed gun until September 30, 2007 and several residents have been encouraged to join the Councillor as he monitors speeding throughout the community. Following the program, Councillor Qadri will donate the radar gun to the City’s Traffic and Parking Operations Branch.

“By taking a proactive approach I am hoping to see for myself where the problems truly are, raise awareness of the issue and encourage people to practice safe driving,” he says. “One of my main priorities is to ensure our community remains safe and this is a great way for everyone to get involved.”

Several City staff will be in attendance the launch of Your Safety...Shad's Business including Ottawa Police Inspector Jill Skinner and Tom Carmody, Traffic Assessment Specialist for the City of Ottawa. The launch will begin at 1 p.m. on the corner of Main Street and Abbott Street in Stittsville.
