Seniors’ Canada Day breakfast

I would like to invite the seniors of our community to attend my annual Canada Day breakfast. The event will take place from 8 am to 10:30 am.

The volunteer fire department has once again generously opened their doors and invited us in for the festivities at the Fire Hall on Stittsville Main Street.

Dave Smith will be on hand to provide yet another delicious breakfast. The Schmodka’s will once again delight everyone with their musical talents.

Please mark your calendars and join me for a delicious breakfast to celebrate our nation’s birthday. We are also encouraging attendees to being non-perishable food items which will be donated to the Stittsville Food Bank. Space is limited, so please contact my office at 613-580-2476 to reserve your spot.

Trustee M. Curry Park

The City of Ottawa has approved the Commemorative naming application to recognize the late Mary Curry by naming the park at 85 Hartsmere Drive in Stittsville as "Trustee M. Curry Park". Known for her dedication to quality education, community activism and leadership, she was fundamental in establishing Catholic schools required within Stittsville to meet the needs of its rapidly growing population.

She served as a Catholic School Board Trustee representing the Stittsville area within the former township of Goulbourn. She passed away in 2005.

Mary Curry was a community leader and dedicated to helping students in Stittsville succeed. This naming ceremony solidifies her legacy as a bright and shining star that will forever be remembered in Stittsville. We honour her with this event with great pride.

Park Party a great success

Thank you to all of those who participated in my annual Park Party on June 12 at Village Square Park.

It was great seeing so many new families in our community coming out and mingling with long-time residents.

I would also like to thank everyone who helped out with the event. I would also like to send my sincerest gratitude to his Worship, Mayor Larry O’Brien, for joining us at the event. I would also like to thank members from the local emergency and health departments who were on hand providing services and educational material for families. The Canadian Beef Farmers’ Association once again handled BBQ duties and served some delicious food for all to enjoy.

I also want to make mention to the staff at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex who gave demonstrations to the Park Party attendees. A big thank you as well to the Stittsville/Goulbourn Horticultural Society for your planting demonstrations.

I hope everyone enjoyed the fun in the sun as we officially kicked off the summer in Stittsville. I look forward to making this event even bigger and better next summer.

Coming together for young Niko

I want to congratulate our wonderful community for all its work in helping Nikolas (Niko) Micelli and his family. Niko, a youngster from Stittsville, was diagnosed with a brain tumour this past February, three weeks before he turned four-years-old.

Niko underwent surgery at CHEO and doctors were able to remove the tumour, however, some malignant particles have spread to his spine. Niko needs special treatments in Montreal for four months.

The community of Stittsville has rallied together to help Niko and his family through a number of fundraising initiatives. This Saturday, Line and Mark Gendron of Gendron Antiques, located at 1145 Carp Road, will be hosting a fundraising event for Niko and his family. The event runs from 10 am to 2 pm. The community is invited to bring antiques for appraisal and also enjoy a BBQ with all proceeds going to Niko and his family. Gendron Antiques is helping raise money so his family can join him in Montreal.

Proposed West Transitway connection open house

I am encouraging all residents to come to the Goulbourn Recreation Centre, located at 1500 Shea Road, for an open house regarding the proposed West Transitway connection on June 22 from 6 pm to 8:30 pm in the foyer.

It affects the Highway 417/Eagleson Road Interchange to March Road and Terry Fox Drive to Fernbank Road.

The first phase from Terry Fox to Scotiabank Place is to be built from 2018 to 2023 and the second phase from Scotiabank to Fernbank is set to start in 2021.

The Environmental Assessment Report will be submitted to the Ministry of Environment sometime this fall.

If you have any questions, please contact Frank McKinney, Program Manager, at 613-580-2424 ext. 28540 or by e-mail at frank.mckinney@ottawa.ca.

Parking on city streets

I would like to remind residents there is a three-hour parking limit between the hours of 7am and 7pm on city streets where there are no posted signs.

I have received e-mails and phone calls from concerned residents who are receiving or witnessing the distribution of by-law infraction tickets.

If you have any questions or concerns, please visit the City’s website at www.ottawa.ca or contact my office.

Lansdowne project update

The Lansdowne revitalization project moved into an important new phase this week.
City staff and our partners presented a number of reports looking at all aspects of the proposed redevelopment.

You can see each of the reports Council will be considering this month by visiting the city’s website: Ottawa.ca. The battery of information on the site is truly impressive.

Public delegations are welcome June 24th and 25th.

Council is expected to vote on the proposed project on June 28th.

Don’t forget to pick up after your dog

Please remember to make it a habit to pick up after your dog when you walk them and take the waste back to your home and dispose of it. Remember, failure to pick up after your dog is a by-law offence as is not taking the waste home and disposing it in your premises.

The City encourages flushing pet waste down the toilet and it will be treated properly. Dog owners can also place the waste in their regular garbage as long as it is properly wrapped in absorbent paper and placed in a sealed, leak free bag.

Always listening and acting on your concerns

As your Councillor, I always welcome your keen input and ideas on how we can sustain and improve Stittsville.

Please contact our office anytime by phone at 613-580-2476 or by e-mail at Shad.Qadri@ottawa.ca.

My ward office is located in the Goulbourn Recreation Complex, located at 1500 Shea Road. The hours of operation are Mondays 9-2pm, Wednesdays 3-8pm, Fridays 9-5pm, and Saturday 9-1pm. Please do not hesitate to pay us a visit. I welcome your call or e-mail to arrange an appointment.

If you are not part of my electronic outreach list and would like to be added, please contact my office to ensure you receive pertinent information concerning our community.
