Stittsville-Kanata West Ward Council Meeting

A big thanks to the residents of our community who came to the first Ward Council meeting for Stittsville-Kanata West. We made great strides in laying out an agenda and hearing residents’ comments and concerns about the community.

It was a diverse attendance that including police officers, long-time residents, new residents and educators. Their input was incredibly valuable to the meeting.

We touched on issues of planning development within the community, including the potential establishment of a Business Improvement Area (BIA) to assist in the re-development of Stittsville Main Street in order to attract businesses and services to the south end of town. It is vital we work as a community to ensure the core of Stittsville is maintained.

There was also an emphasis on residents providing comments on the City’s Official Plan being reviewed this year. Please contact my office for more information.

Another issue, which will carry to our next meeting, is finding a way to better integrate the youth of our community into the fabric of Stittsville-Kanata West. We will be discussing the possibility of developing a Youth Initiative Program to hear concerns and wishes for the community from local youths, including the need for increased recreational and arts programs. It’s important we ensure they feel a part of our community and have something to call their own.

I will keep you updated on the next Ward Council meeting we have. It’s important I hear your comments and concerns in order to reflect your thoughts and concerns around the council table.

Winterfest set to blow through town

Stittsville’s annual Winterfest is just around the corner, occurring on Feb. 24 starting at 1p.m.

Some great family activities are planned, including hayrides, broomball, tug-of-war and chicken bowling.

I encourage all residents to come out and enjoy a great, local event full of fun. It’s always been a fantastic way to beat the winter blahs and meet some of your neighbours.

And do not forget to come out and take me on in a game of broomball.

Carp Floodplain Update

Be assured we are aware that preliminary work has been done at the subdivision located west of the Carp River accessed by Maple Grove Road.

Appropriate approval was issued to permit this work. However, it has been agreed that the developer will stop filling the area for the time being.

I am continuing to work with City staff, the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority and the developer, and will be providing updates in future columns. Please contact my office if you would like additional details on this matter.

Roundabout on Huntmar Drive

A new roundabout has been constructed on Huntmar Drive in the Mattamy subdivision. Proper signage has been installed for your convenience.

I am really pleased this roundabout has been constructed; roundabouts help preserve our environment, reduce traffic accidents and conserve energy.

An important aspect in their implementation is public education. Please be advised traffic circulates counter-clockwise within the roundabout and always to the right of the central island. Vehicles within the roundabout have right-of-way over entering traffic.

I encourage you to visit the city’s website at www.ottawa.ca/residentsonthemove and follow the links: driving/traffic/roundabouts for more information. Proper education will make this a smooth transition for us all.

Application for 8 Elm Cres.

An application was submitted for a land severance and minor variance to build two dwellings on the property of 8 Elm Cres. Discussions took place between the applicant and the local residents at two public meetings.

I am happy to advise that an agreeable solution was reached with both parties. It was agreed the property that requires a minor variance, had plans submitted for a single story home in this parcel. As there was no minor variance required for the other parcel of land it was not possible to place a similar restriction.

This item was approved at the City's Committee of Adjustment on Feb. 6.

2008 Planning Primer Program open to residents

Have you ever wondered how land-use planning is done? The city is inviting residents to sign up for a free planning primer program in order to better understand and become involved in the land-use planning process.

The Primer I course occurs March 1 or March 3, and the Primer II course occurs June 14 or June 16.

High School students make appearance during Grammy’s

Three local high school students, Justin Elchakieh, Derek Jones and Josh Holmes, won a national contest put on by Nestlé Canada, celebrating their love for Turtles chocolate.

The boys did a great job with a rock n’ roll-themed video, which was fittingly aired during the Grammy Awards on Feb. 10. They produced, acted and sang their way to capturing first place and beat out 50 other contenders who were vying for the top prize.

Congratulations to all three of you for an entertaining and creative video. Stittsville is a talented community.

Local teens sing O Canada at council

It was a great pleasure having the opportunity to listen to Stittsville residents Kyle and Joel Curry sing O Canada at City Council on Feb 13. I know everyone around the council table was more than impressed with their performance – they absolutely loved what they heard.

The boys have been entertaining residents for several years, so it was great to see them singing on an even bigger stage.

They made Stittsville proud.
