Join the City’s Spring Cleaning the Capital Team The annual Spring Cleaning the Capital Campaign starts on April 15. I invite you to get involved to give our city a clean sweep this spring. With your help, Stittsville can be the cleanest ward in the City and once again claim the City prize for the highest participation rate. A record 87,400 participants made Cleaning the Capital 2009 the most successful campaign to date. It’s easy to take part. All you have to do is select a cleanup location where litter or graffiti has accumulated over the winter months. It can be a park, pathway, schoolyard or any public property requiring tidying up. Once you’ve chosen your cleanup location, you can register online at www.ottawa.ca/clean. The campaign runs from April 15 to May 15; register on or before April 14 for your chance to win early-bird prizes. Cleanup Starter Kits for litter pickup and/or graffiti removal projects are available to all registered volunteers. This year, the starter kits can be picked up at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex. When you register your group for this event, please be sure to click the GRC for pick-up of the starter kit. Together we can help keep Ottawa – and our community – clean, green, graffiti-free and litter-free. For more information and to register, visit www.ottawa.ca/clean. Putting the brakes to speeding Now that the warm months are upon us and road conditions have improved, speeding is once again on the rise. I encourage you and your neighbours to report speeding when you witness it by calling 613-236-1222 ext 7300. Every call is recovered and Police are able to identify “hot spots” for further monitoring. My office is also launching a speed survey – using a radar gun and digital speed board to remind residents of their speed. The data collected is provided to the City’s Traffic department as well as the Police. If you would like a speed survey completed in your neighbourhood, please contact my office to arrange a suitable time. The City of Ottawa’s Traffic Department can deply a large digital speed board for a 12-hour period. The board displays the motorist’s speed as they drive by. It is a good tool in reminding drivers to be cognizant of their speed. If you would like a speed survey completed in your neighbourhood, or a digital speed board deployed, please contact my office to arrange a suitable time and location. City to go dark in celebration of Earth Hour On March 27, the City will go dark from 8:30-9:30pm in celebration of Earth Hour. Earth Hour is a unique opportunity to remind Ottawa's residents what they can do in their personal lives to promote environmental conservation for the benefit of today's and future generations. Earth Hour is the world's largest co-ordinated energy conservation initiative. This year, Earth Hour organizers hope to reach 1 billion people in more than 4,000 cities around the world. Earth Hour was started by the World Wildlife Fund in Sydney, Australia in 2007. For the third year running, the City of Ottawa is encouraging residents to register online a www.wwf.ca/earthhour to show their support for energy conservation. Historical name for Stittsville park I believe it is important to retain the historical significance and legacy of our communities for existing and future generations. I have initiated a request to name the large park at 230 Mistral Way in the Fairwinds Subdivision “Bandmaster Park.” This name reflects the popularity of the Hazeldean Brass Band, which travelled throughout the area, and included members of the local Hazeldean Road families. The Hazeldean Band was first organized in 1884, arising out of the musical talent being exhibited by the young men of the area. This proposed name will be considered at the Community and Protective Services Committee on April 1 and by City Council on April 14. To provide written comments or to register to speak to the committee, please contact my office as well as the committee coordinator, Marc Desjardins, at Marc.Desjardins@ottawa.ca or 613-580-2424 ext 28821. Please stay off sports fields and baseball diamonds The City is asking residents to stay off sports fields and baseball diamonds to allow the turf to grow for the upcoming season. Access to ball diamonds is not permitted prior to May 1. Access to sports fields is not permitted prior to May 15. Organizations with City contracts can use the facilities, but only on the dates specified in their contracts (weather permitting). |
