Canada Day celebrations in Stittsville

July 1 is a day for all Canadians to take pride in our country and celebrate our nation’s rich past, present and future.

The Stittsville Village Association’s Canada Day event promises to be a great day for families. The event will begin at 3pm and occur adjacent to the Goulbourn Recreation Complex.

Piper Jordan McConnell will pipe to announce the start of the celebrations, while local musical talent Joel and Kyle Curry will perform the national anthem. Members of the Stittsville Legion will be on hand to raise the Canadian flag.

Musical guests include Mumbo Jumbo Voodoo Combo, Burning Halo’s, Paul Grant and the Praisers, Music 4 All Orchestra and Kyle and Joel Curry. The Duart Dillon School Of Highland Dancers and the Therien Martial Arts School will offer great artistic and athletic displays. Clowns, superheroes, games and midways will be available as well.

In the spirit of tradition, the evening will be capped off by fireworks lighting up the sky.

I look forward to seeing you and your family at the festivities.

Investing in education

The Ontario Ministry of Education has earmarked $9 million in funding for a new elementary school in the Upcountry subdivision, located in the south-end of Stittsville.

The school, which is expected to have a population of 600 students, is anticipated to open for the 2011-2012 school year.

While this is welcome news for our community, as existing schools are bursting at the seams with high enrolment rates, we are still in desperate need of a public high school, given current and future population growth projections.

I plan to speak with the Minister of Education to encourage the Province to invest in a public high school for Stittsville. It is imperative that it is considered a top priority for the Ministry of Education and the Ottawa Carleton District School Board.

Park Party a great success

Thank you to all of those who participated in my annual Park Party on June 13 at Village Square Park.

I am proud to announce the community raised $1100 for the Stittsville Food Bank. This is a tremendous response to help those in need and I cannot thank the residents of Stittsville-Kanata West enough for their on-going support and commitment to charitable causes.

It was great seeing so many new families in our community coming out and mingling with long-time residents.

I hope everyone enjoyed the fun in the sun as we officially kicked off the summer in Stittsville. I look forward to making this event even bigger and better next summer.

Seniors’ Canada Day breakfast

I would like to remind the seniors of our community to please contact my office and reserve your seat at my annual Canada Day breakfast.

The volunteer fire department has once again generously opened their doors and invited us in for the festivities at the Fire Hall on Stittsville Main Street.

Nate’s Delicatessen will be on hand to provide yet another delicious breakfast, while the Schmodka’s will once again delight everyone with their musical talents. The event runs from 8-10:30am.

Please mark your calendars and join me for a tremendous breakfast to celebrate our nation’s birthday.

Space is limited, so please contact my office at 613-580-2476 to reserve your spot.

Congratulations graduates!

Congratulations to the graduating class of 2009 from Sacred Heart Catholic High School, Frederick Banting Alternate School, and South Carleton High School.

There are no longer limitations or barriers; the dreams you have held for so long can now become a reality. You have acquired the knowledge, the skills and the talent to maximize your goals and reach your potential.

I wish you all much success as you enter an exciting new time in your life.

Stittsville’s Good Read

A new chapter is being written at the Stittsville Library with the launch of the Good Read bookstore.

Under the auspices of the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association (FOPLA), the self-serve bookstore is organized and maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers.

The hours for the store are the same as the library hours.

The shelves are filled with gently used fiction and non-fiction books for all ages, as well as magazines, CDs, and DVDs. Prices range from 25 cents to $3.

Residents have generously donated all the material in the library. The rule of thumb when donating to the Good Read is to ask yourself if the materials are current enough and in proper condition.

I hope you can visit the community’s newest bookstore and find your summer read.

Summer hours for Police Station

Front desk services at our community police station will be operating on a summer schedule beginning July 6 to August 28.

The new hours will be Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm, at the Kanata station, located at 95 Abbeyhill Dr.

Regardless of the summer months, you can still ‘Make the Right Call!’ For life-threatening emergencies or crimes in progress, please call 911. To report a theft, property damage, missing person or stolen vehicle, please contact the call centre at 613-236-1222, ext 7300. For community Police Centres and all other enquiries call 613-236-1222.
