Dear residents,

City Looks to Improve Methods of Dealing with IC&I Waste

Diverting waste from Ottawa’s landfills has really come to the forefront over the past year. Based on this the City is examining several options to better manage our waste.

Currently the City is seeking input from Ottawa businesses to help improve recycling and composting. Last week the City of Ottawa released a survey on waste and recycling and I encourage all businesses in our community to participate. Some of the questions asked in this survey include how materials are managed within your business, frequency of recycling and how much is spent per month on solid non-hazardous waste disposal services.

I was pleased to see the contents of this survey and it is an excellent step towards changing the methods we currently use to manage Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (IC&I) waste. IC&I currently accounts for approximately 65 per cent of all waste in our area landfills and this is definitely a problem that must be rectified as soon as possible. Please note this survey is open to businesses in Ottawa only. All of your answers are confidential and the results will be used in reports that are prepared for Council and are being collected to help the City improve waste management programs.

For more information about this survey please contact Shikha McGowan of Jacques Whitford at 613-738-0708 or by email at shikha.mcgowan@jacqueswhitford.com.

Recently the City released the IC&I and C&D Management Options Report. This report came as a result of a request made by City Council last summer directing staff to conduct an IC&I study and devise a strategy that will help divert waste out of our City’s landfills.

Join Me For A Chat July 27

I invite you to join me for a chat and a coffee or tea between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. on July 27 at the Stittsville Public Library, located on 1637 Main Street.

This is a great opportunity to ask questions about our community and share your thoughts on different issues affecting our ward. I look forward to meeting with you and hearing your thoughts on how we can improve and sustain Stittsville-Kanata West.

Huntmar Road Closure July 23-August 8

The southbound lanes on Huntmar Road from Palladium Drive to Cyclone Taylor Boulevard will be closed from July 23 to August 8. The reason for this is that contractor Karson, Kartage and Konstruction will be installing sewer services for the Mattamy development.

There will be a signed detour in place to guide you through this, all emergency accesses will be maintained and the impact to traffic in the area will be low. Should you have any questions please contact my office.
