Waste Management’s Step Back Allows Our
Community To Move Forward
Now that Waste Management (WM) has decided to go back to
the drawing board, we have the opportunity to explore solutions that will make
more sense for our community.
Last week WM announced that they have withdrawn their
proposed Terms of Reference (ToR) from the Ministry of Environment (MOE). WM has
said they will be making significant changes to the document and re-submitting
it to the MOE at a later date.
Included in the changes to the ToR are reduced landfill
size, enhanced diversion and recycling facilities and a proposed
waste-from-energy facility. Following WM's submission of their new document, our
community will have the opportunity to submit comments and recommendations.
On April 18 a public meeting was held outlining these
changes and WM’s steps moving forward. I want to thank all of you who took the
time to attend and take part in the question and answer period. Our community
has yet again spoken in one strong voice opposing any expansion of the Carp Road
landfill.
In the coming months, I am planning to host a public
meeting featuring a variety of companies presenting their alternative
technologies to our community. Please be assured we have several options and
will not settle for what seems to be the most convenient.
During the time before WM submits their ToR, it is very
important for our community to continue reporting specific incidents that affect
our quality of life each and every day. Odour report forms can be found on my
website (www.shadqadri.com). Please feel
free to contact my office any time should you have any questions or concerns.
Please Stay Off Sports Fields
The City of Ottawa is requesting that residents stay off
our local ball diamonds and sports fields until next month in order to allow the
turf to grow properly for the coming sports season.
However, local organizations with official City contracts
have been granted access for certain dates outlined in their contracts.
Access to baseball diamonds will be permitted on May 1 and
for sports fields on May 15.
Please ensure you help keep the fields in great condition for our community to
enjoy this summer.
Kidz Versus Cancer April 29
Members of our community have wrapped their arms around a
young boy with cancer.
Elgin Fraser, of Carleton Place, was just nine months old
when he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a cancer of the sympathetic nervous
system. Young Elgin is a huge hockey fan and a special game is being held in his
honour on April 29.
The Stittsville Bulldogs will face off against the
Carleton Place Thrashers at the Bell Sensplex, located at 1565 Maple Grove Road,
in an effort to raise funds for Elgin and his family.
Tickets for this great event may be purchased from players
both beforehand and at the rink on April 29. Organizers have suggested a
donation of $5 for a ticket and in an effort to raise further funds, there will
be also be a variety of door prizes and raffles.

Happy Anniversary
Many congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Tyler of Stittsville
who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 20. I had the opportunity
to meet with this lovely couple last week and it was wonderful to chat with them
about this milestone in their lives.
