Dear residents,
Working Together To Find Solutions
I am pleased to announce that the majority of people in
attendance at the Timbermere Hydro Corridor meeting last week were in favour of
the proposal to naturalize this area.
This solution came forward as a result of a discussion I
had with Public Works and Services staff regarding residents’ concerns with the
lack of maintenance in the corridor. During the meeting, residents were provided
with information on how to apply for a grant with the City’s TREE community
planting program. The objectives of the TREE program are to encourage
stewardship through assistance with tree planting projects, provide forestry
outreach education, recognize excellence in arboriculture initiatives, create
sponsorship opportunities and partnerships with the community.
My office will be accepting comments on this proposal
until the end of the September. Following this I will be setting up a committee
of people who will work with Tracy Schwets from the City’s Forestry Division,
who has committed to partnering with the community to develop a planting scheme
that is appropriate for this area. Once this plan has been drafted, I will
provide all of you with the opportunity to view it on my website and submit any
additional comments you may have.
The final step in this process will be to submit an
application to the TREE program and initiate this project for Spring 2008. If
you are interested in becoming involved or would like more information please
contact my office.
Transportation Connections
On Sept.18 I hosted a public meeting to discuss two possible transportation
connections for Kanata West and the Stittsville community.
The first item of discussion was the possible closure of a
section of Johnwoods Street to help reduce the traffic that has been cutting
through this area. This proposal would not restrict access for residents living
on Johnwoods as there would be connections to Maple Grove Road through other
residential streets. It is anticipated that when Huntmar Road opens, this would
help to reduce some traffic on the street.
Many residents suggested that it might be best to wait and
see if the Huntmar extension reduces traffic on Johnwoods Street. Overall
residents were not in support of this proposal, as they believe it would make
more sense to provide drivers with a variety of options to access the highway
and Scotiabank Place.
The second proposal we discussed was the possible interim
connection of the Stittsville Main Street extension to the west end of Maple
Grove Road. Residents living in close proximity to Maple Grove expressed
concerns regarding a possible increase in traffic in the area.
I encourage you to contact my office by email or phone to
provide your comments on the above proposals. Please be assured that the items
brought forward at this meeting were only preliminary discussions and no final
decisions have been made.
Roundabouts
At our last City Council meeting, my colleagues and I
carried a report regarding the use of roundabouts.
This report directed staff to consider roundabouts as part
of new transportation and development proposals and as an alternative to traffic
signals.
I am in favour of using roundabouts in our community
because they help preserve our environment, reduce traffic accidents and
conserve energy. An important aspect of implementing roundabouts is public
education and I encourage you to visit my website
www.shadqadri.com to view this
comprehensive report.
The use of roundabouts in Ottawa was also endorsed in the
Mayor’s Task Force on Transportation report Moving Ottawa as a great method of
helping to calm traffic and reduce congestion.
Habitat For Humanity
Last weekend I was honoured to attend the official Habitat For Humanity
Dedication Day in Stittsville. City of Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien was also in
attendance to celebrate the completion of this extraordinary project in our
community.
Congratulations to the Woman’s Build volunteers who have
dedicated their time and talents to building two beautiful homes on White Cedar
Court. On behalf of our entire community, I would like to extend a warm welcome
to the Hassan and Pettapiece families.
Villagefest
There will be no shortage of fun activities for our
community to enjoy this weekend.
On Sept. 29 Villagefest 2007 will kick off with a pancake
breakfast hosted by Stittsville’s volunteer firefighters at the Fire Hall on
Main Street from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. A soapbox derby will begin at 8:30 a.m. on
Abbott Street East and the annual Villagefest Parade will begin its tour along
Stittsville Main Street at 11 a.m.
In addition to this, a number of fun activities will be
taking place in Village Square throughout the day including games, a dress-up
dog show, horse drawn carriages, a bbq, apple pie and cider, a great display by
the Goulbourn Museum and free entertainment for people of all ages.
Thank you to the Stittsville Village Association
volunteers for organizing this great event for our community.
