NEWS ARCHIVESFebruary 22, 2008 New police station coming to community Polices Services will be constructing a new west end police station in our ward. The new police station will be located at 2499 Palladium Drive on a 5.6 acres site located at the southwest corner of Palladium Drive and Huntmar Drive. Police Services reviewed many sites and this property proved to have the best value. This police station will provide a number of services and will be the deployment area for Police in the west end of Ottawa. The police hope to have this facility open in 2009. This item was discussed at the Police Services Board meeting on Feb. 25. The following is an excerpt from a letter from the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority: The filling activity adjacent to the Carp River on the Richcraft property was undertaken in accordance with a permit issued by the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority in April 2007 to place fill within the regulation limit but outside of the Regulatory (1:100 yr) floodplain of the Carp River. A condition of the permit required Richcraft to physically stake the floodplain limit and install sediment control barriers to ensure no fill material encroaches on the floodplain. Conservation Authority staff have inspected the location of the fill placement and have confirmed that it is located outside of the floodplain as required. Conservation Authority staff will conduct regular inspections of the sediment control barriers to ensure they remain intact and provide effective sediment control. The filling activity, which is outside of this area, will not affect the floodplain. The Carp River Restoration Plan, as proposed by the City of Ottawa and the Kanata West Owners Group, is being designed to improve the health of the Carp River and reduce potential flood risk. The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority will not accept any proposal, which will increase flood risk along the Carp River and recognizes that improvements to the Carp River are critical to achieving this objective. I am hosting a public meeting to discuss the possibility of having an art gallery in Stittsville. The meeting will be held on March 6 at 7 p.m. at the Goulbourn Municipal Building located at 2135 Huntley Rd. Preliminary discussions have taken place with City staff discussing different options and this information will be presented at the meeting. I encourage all artists to attend this meeting to determine how an art gallery can be developed in Stittsville. I want to extend my thanks to a group of artists in the community who have joined together to assist in having this art gallery come to fruition. This has been a long dream for residents of the community and I look forward to assisting in making this dream a reality. For more information please contact my office. There are have been a rash of break-ins in our community over the last few weeks. Our community police team, led by Const. Ryan Strotmann, have worked diligently posting flyers around the community reminding residents to lock their garages and cars. A surveillance operation was set up in the Granite Ridge area to keep an eye on some of the problem areas. Neighbourhood Watch has also been notified of these incidents and they will help assist the police in alerting residents and ensuring they take extra precautions in protecting themselves. Please be proactive in safeguarding yourself – lock your cars, garages and homes. We can put a stop to this string of criminal activity. Please call the police at 236-1222 Ext. 7300 for damage to your house, car or property after the fact. Call 911 for any criminal activity in progress. Please visit my website for more comprehensive and detailed information on who to call in the event of an emergency. I encourage you to communicate any incidences that occur in your neighbourhood to police. The first official Neighbourhood Watch meeting for the Liard, Morningsun, Sonia, Sunray and John Sidney area was held on Feb. 25. Const. Ryan Strotmann, Watch Coordinator Wayne Harvey and Victor McNabney, a volunteer with Neighbourhood Watch, were all in attendance discussing the recent criminal activity in the area. Having community groups like Neighbourhood Watch are critical to developing crime prevention and response strategies in our area. Working with the community police and Neighbourhood Watch, we can ensure Stittsville-Kanata West remains a safe place to live, work and play. It was great seeing so many residents braving the cold weather to come out to our annual Winterfest, held Feb. 22-24. The event kicked off with a test of our community’s smarts. The third annual Trivia Challenge Night, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ottawa-Stittsville, had Stittsville residents breaking out in a mental sweat. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Stittsville Village Association and the volunteer firefighters for putting on a tremendous event. A lot of effort was put into this weekend and it showed. Several volunteers put in countless hours to make this weekend possible and it was greatly appreciated. The dedicated residents who are heavily involved in our community deserve big thanks for their outstanding hard work in putting on Winterfest, among other community events. Their commitment to enhancing our community and bringing residents together is truly appreciated by everyone. As your Councillor, I always welcome your keen input and ideas on how we can sustain and improve Stittsville-Kanata West.
