NEWS ARCHIVESApril 23, 2010 2010 Appreciation Awards The 2010 Stittsville Appreciation Awards were held on April 20. The many individuals who work to shape Stittsville into the community it is today were honoured over the course of the evening. The night was a reflection of all your efforts for being shining candles in the Stittsville community. The Brown family won the Business of the Year for Brown’s Independent
Grocers. They were described as people who make Stittsville a better place to
live through voluntary actions among residents and promoting positive citizen
development. Metin Akgun, the president of the Stittsville Village Association, won the Senior Citizen of the Year award. The heart and soul of the SVA, Metin has been a member since its inception. Under his leadership, the SVA continues to work in making our community one of the bright and growing areas in Ottawa. At the age of 77 and a Stittsville resident of 45 years, John Leroux was the recipient of the Roger Griffiths Memorial Citizen of the Year. When you associate sports in our community, you think of John. But sports is not all he is known for. John served our country as a military man, and continues to be an active member of our Legion. Roger Griffiths exemplified everything that meant community service. As for John, I congratulate him on this honour, as he embodies everything this award means. At this time, I would like to thank everyone who attended and congratulate all the winners and nominees. It is with your hard work and dedication that makes Stittsville a thriving and vibrant community.
