Rain causes significant flooding in Stittsville

A heavy rainstorm on the evening of July 24 caused severe flooding throughout the community, affecting both new subdivisions and the older parts of the community.

I had an opportunity to visit with many of the homeowners throughout the weekend to survey the damage and offer my support. If you, or anyone you know, has been affected by flood damage, please call my office at 613-580-2476 or e-mail Shad.Qadri@ottawa.ca.

I also urge residents to contact the City’s helpline at 311 to obtain an incident report, and contact your home insurance company.

I met with senior City Staff on Monday to discuss the situation and the need for an effective action plan to remedy the situation and prevent any future incidents occurring. I have requested a thorough examination of what transpired and I expect Staff to report the findings shortly. I will ensure these comments are relayed to the public.

For more information, or to offer assistance, please contact my office.

See it? Report it.

My office has been receiving increasing calls reporting vandalism, break and enters and disturbances on our streets and in our parks.

It is important my office is informed of these matters, but it is incredibly important that you report these incidents to Police – they can be done anonymously if you are concerned about your safety. Every call is recorded and ensures that specific "hot spots" are identified. Please always get a Report Number when you do call, as this number will help on follow-up action.

For life-threatening emergencies or crimes in progress, please call 911. To report alcohol and drug use in public, or suspicious activity of vehicles, please call 613-230-6211. To report a theft, property damage, missing vehicle or stolen property, please call the Ottawa Police’s call centre at 613-236-1222 ext. 7300. For by-law issues, such as noise complaints, please call the City’s helpline at 311.

It is important these activities are being reported to Police in order to legitimize concerns. If Police see developing trends and increased call volume, they can allocate resources to combat the issue. If it fails to be reported, we run the risk of the issue not being addressed.

Please do not hesitate to contact my office for more information.

Safety tips for reusable grocery bags

With grocery stores and retail outlets across the Country promoting the environmental benefit of reusable shopping bags, Health Canada is urging consumers to be cognizant of safety tips to avoid cross-contamination of food borne illness.

When you are using cloth bags, make sure to wash them frequently, especially after carrying fresh produce, meat, poultry or fish. Some reusable grocery bags may not be machine washable. If you are using this type of grocery bag, you should make sure to wash them by hand frequently with hot soapy water.

You should put fresh or frozen raw meat, poultry and fish in separate bags from fresh produce and other ready-to-eat foods. You can also put your meat, poultry or fish in plastic bags, such as the clear bags you can find in the produce and some meat sections. This will help prevent the juices from leaking out and contaminating your reusable bags and other foods. Fresh produce should always be placed in plastic bags to protect them from contamination.

If you are using your grocery bags to store or transport non-food items, they should be thoroughly washed before using them for groceries.

Count Ottawa In on Community Challenge Day

The City has taken up the challenge and joined 20 other municipalities who are committed to reducing energy consumption between 8am and 8pm on August 14.

The Ontario Power Authority is recognizing the sixth-year anniversary of the biggest blackout in North American history by calling for a province-wide conservation competition among Ontario communities.

The City of Woodstock initiated the competition, under the banner of Count Me In! Community Challenge Day.

Municipalities can compete in two categories - showing the highest percentage drop in electricity consumption on August 14, and the highest per-capita participation in the Count Me In! pledge drive.

The results of the provincial challenge will be announced in Ottawa at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario annual conference on August 19.

On August 14 let’s show the province we have the power to conserve.

Did you know?

Did you know there is an 11pm curfew in City parks, under the By-Law No. 2004-276. The general hours of operation for City parks are 5am-11pm.

Police and By-Law services have informed my office they will take a zero tolerance approach and the laws will be enforced to those who disobey. Breaking the park curfew can carry a $65 fine.
