NEWS ARCHIVESMarch 26, 2010 Encouraging you to continue shopping locally With the construction of Hazeldean Road moving along at a brisk pace, please remember that the many businesses lining Hazeldean Road remain open. These businesses depend heavily on the surrounding community – and that reliance is emphasized during major construction. I recognize it is difficult given the area conditions, but we must continue to offer our support to the businesses along Hazeldean Road, Main Street, as well as those throughout Stittsville. On behalf of Stittsville’s business community, I extend my sincerest appreciation and thanks for your continued support. Noise from Cedarow Pumping Station Some members of the community have been alarmed by the pump noise coming from the Poole Creek /Cedarow Court area. This noise is coming from the Cedarow pumping station. The contractor, Graydex, has been installing large-sized deep storm sewers west of Poole Creek. The contractor is pumping out the holding tank at the Cedarow pumping station because the force main is presently out of service. This pumping operation is required until the new sewer is installed. There have been some unexpected delays, which have lengthened the time of this disruption. This work is expected to continue for at least the next two weeks. It should be noted the contractor is required to pump during the evening because that is when the storage capacity of the tank is very small. City Staff have been in contact with the contractor to try to make arrangements to minimize the overnight work. As the noise is not related to the businesses in the vicinity of the pumping station, please contact my office should you have any questions or concerns. City approves 2010 water and wastewater budget City Council has approved the 2010 water and wastewater budget, which tackles a range of issues including drinking water, infrastructure, and flooding. Highlights of the budget include: $4 million in works to reduce the risk of basement flooding in the City’s west end; $213 million in capital works; and $24 million for the Ottawa River Action Plan project aimed at ensuring the long-term health of the Ottawa River. The 9 per cent increase in the water and wastewater budget is vital to ensuring we continue to invest in City infrastructure, while protecting our environment and mitigating potential flooding. The increase is part of a three-year initiative, which was approved last year, aimed at a long-term strategy to enhancing water and wastewater projects. Leaf and Yard Waste pick-up to resume Given the warm weather, many residents are beginning to prepare their gardens and yards for the summer ahead. Please remember that dumping leaf and yard waste in and on City parks and pathways is a By-Law infraction and can result in a fine. I encourage anyone witnessing this type of infraction to please alert By-Law staff by either calling 3-1-1 or e-mailing the City's Call Centre at 311@ottawa.ca. The City’s Yard and Leaf Program commences the week of April 12; smaller amounts of yard waste can also be included in your Green Bin. Please refer to your collection calendar for specific dates. Relay For Life 2010 launches The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life 2010 has officially kicked off. This year’s Relay For Life takes place at Sacred Heart Catholic High School from 7pm on June 18 to 7am on June 19. Last year, the Relay raised $199,376, bringing Stittsville’s contribution to $400,000. Now its fourth year, the three Relay For Life events in Ottawa (including Stittsville, Orleans, and Nepean) have raised $1.4 million. The Relay For Life is more than just a fundraiser – it is an opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer and fight back against a disease that takes too many. Teams of 10 people – comprised of friends, family members, neighbours and co-workers – take turns walking, running or strolling around a track in this 12-hour, non-competitive overnight relay. For more information or for registration details, please visit www.relayforlife.ca/stittsville or call the Canadian Cancer Society’s Ottawa office at 613-723-1744.
