Dear residents,
Odour Report Results in Frustration for Our Community
I have a difficult time believing that so many of us could
have mistaken the source of the pungent odour that affects our quality of life
in Stittsville-Kanata West.
In a report released last week, Waste Management (WM)
claims that 57 per cent of the odour complaints made by our community are
unsubstantiated and came from a source other than the Carp Road landfill. I know
many of you are left incredibly frustrated by this and please know I share these
frustrations with you.
An issue of this nature has the potential to portray our
community in a negative light but it is my hope that we can continue to move
forward and set a positive example for all Ottawa residents.
Since WM first applied for an expansion of the Carp Road
landfill in 2006, residents have worked together to oppose the company’s plans
in a rational and respectful manner. You have organized successful events such
as Earth Day to help raise awareness of environmental issues and drafted
intelligent responses to the Terms of Reference. It is this type of behaviour
that makes our community unique and special.
For close to two years many volunteers have dedicated
their time and talents to examining alternatives to landfill and I am proud to
represent such an educated and involved community. Although our frustrations are
mounting, it is vastly important to stay focused on the bigger picture and push
for positive changes to the methods we currently use to deal with our solid
wastes.
However, at the same time, the issue of odours emanating
from the Carp Road landfill is still completely unacceptable. I encourage you to
continue to report odours at either my website (www.shadqadri.com)
or at www.nodump.ca.
I have contacted Waste Management for further information
and reasoning behind their dismissal of over half of your complaints. I have
also requested an on-site meeting to observe the operations of the weather
monitoring system they use to track the fugitive odours from their site. I look
forward to learning more from the company about their methods of tracking and
identifying odours from the landfill. Please be assured I will keep all of you
informed as this process continues.
Construction on Stittsville Main and Hazeldean
Within the next month construction of road modifications
will begin on Stittsville Main Street and Hazeldean Road.
These enhancements are being made to better service the
existing community of Stittsville and also the new residential and commercial
development of Jackson Trails.
Included in these modifications are the addition of
sidewalks on the north side of Hazeldean, installation of a west-bound right
turning lane on the west of Stittsville Main Street, the widening of Hazeldean
Road at the central access and the construction of an island at the westerly
access, located west of Stittsville Main Street. It is anticipated that this
work will be completed during the 2007 construction season.

website and for further information please contact my office by phone at

Crime Rates in Stittsville
Last week Ottawa Police Service released the 2005-2006
crime trends for the City of Ottawa. Crimes in Ward 6 have risen slightly but
they are more petty in nature such as break and enter and mischief.
We are fortunate to live in a safe and clean community and
must continue to sustain and improve this by being involved and raising
awareness of the issues.
I commend the Ottawa Police who have done a great job of
controlling crimes within our City. To view this detailed report please visit my
website and to view citywide statistics please visit the Ottawa Police Service
website at

Thank You
I would like to extend a huge thank you to Fran and Don
Cooper who have worked hard to maintain the garden located around the
Stittsville sign at the entrance of our community. Your exceptional work is very
much appreciated and serves as a great welcome to visitors and residents.
Sincerely,

Councillor Shad Qadri
