Do you know an individual or business that deserves recognition? This is your opportunity to bring their special contributions forward.

My office is now seeking nominations for the second annual Stittsville Appreciation Awards. Categories include the Roger Griffiths Memorial Citizen of the Year, Senior of the Year (age 65 and older), Youth of the Year (19 and younger), and Business of the Year.

Waste diversion efforts at an all-time high

I am pleased to announce Stittsville has one of the highest participation rates in the Green Bin program, along with Orleans and the Glebe.

Since the program was launched in January, more than 2,000 tonnes of organic material have been diverted from area landfills.

The introduction of the Green Bin program has also peaked interest in the City’s other waste diversion efforts. Across the city, residential diversion rates in January 2010 are up 20 per cent over January 2009.

Participation in the Green Bin program is resulting in the biggest increase in residential diversion in years and directly translates into less waste headed to the landfill.

Police Station opens its doors

A big thank you goes out to the more than 1,000 residents who attended the official unveiling of the Ottawa Police’s new West Division Patrol Station.

I would also like to thank the Ottawa Police for hosting a tremendous event and providing residents with the opportunity to see Police operations at an intimate level.

The proximity of the new police station will be a tremendous benefit to our community. I have long maintained that a visible police presence is a comforting sight for residents and, most importantly, a deterrent for others.

Hazeldean Road widening noise exemption

The City has approved a noise exemption for the placement of a 900mm water main located at the north side of the Carp River Bridge as well as for excavation work.

To minimize noise levels throughout the night, contractors will ensure the majority of materials are delivered during the day. Throughout nightly construction, an effort will be made to minimize running equipment to keep decibel levels as low as possible.

This work is necessary to meet the environmental constraint deadline of March 15, 2010. This noise exemption will permit the contractor to work overnight from 7pm on March 3 to 12am on March 15.

For more information, please contact my office and Darlene Crawford, Bylaw Services, at 613-580-2424 ext. 41506 or Darlene.Crawford@ottawa.ca.

Fernbank Subdivision plans submitted

A plan of subdivision has been submitted for 5611 Fernbank Road, which is located within the Fernbank Community Design Plan (CDP) area.

The proposed plan of subdivision will be primarily comprised of low and medium density residential units, including single-detached dwellings, multiple-attached dwelling units and stacked townhome dwelling units. The proposal also includes institutional blocks, a mixed-use block, a park block, a park and ride block, a paramedic post block, and a storm water management block.

For more information, and to provide comments on the plan by March 19, please contact my office and the City Planner, Mark Young, at 613-580-2424 ext. 41396 or Mark.Young@ottawa.ca.

You can view the plans at www.shadqadri.com or by visiting www.ottawa.ca/devapps.

I will ensure a public meeting is held in the future and the community is informed as details become available.

City declares Bradley/Craig Farmstead a heritage site

City Council has approved the heritage designation of the Bradley/Craig Farmstead, located at 590 Hazeldean Road.

Originally settled in the nineteenth century by the Bradley family, the farmhouse and barn represent the development of agricultural activity in Ottawa.

The new designation will protect this valuable part of Ottawa’s rural heritage.
