Police Chief Vernon White in Stittsville Oct. 9

Police Chief Vernon WhiteThere are many exciting opportunities happening in our community this month.

I am thrilled to announce that City of Ottawa Police Chief Vernon White will be visiting our community on Oct. 9 to discuss policing and safety in Stittsville-Kanata West and across our City.

The idea for this meeting came as a result of the creation of my new Ward Council. Last month I met with a handful of residents from a wide variety of backgrounds to hear suggestions on how we can all work together to improve and sustain our community.

My hope is that this new Ward Council will provide me with different ways to stay informed on the issues that are important to you and also assist me in representing your needs at City Hall.

I plan on holding these meetings every second Tuesday of the month and each agenda will be set depending upon your suggestions, items coming forward in the community and hot topics effecting residents across the City.

All Ward Council meetings are open to the public and I rely on your keen observations and opinions to ensure I can continue to provide our community with effective representation.

Our Ward Council is truly off to a fantastic start with the great opportunity we have to speak with Chief White about safety, which is a huge priority for our community. I encourage all of you to attend this meeting, which is taking place on Oct. 9 at Sacred Heart Catholic High School, located at 5870 Abbott Street in Stittsville, from 7 p.m.-10 p.m.

Budget Options

During last week’s Council meeting we passed a motion directing City staff to examine three options for this years budget.

I seconded the motion, put forward by Councillor Christine Leadman, stating that the draft budget should include an option for a 0 per cent, 1.4 per cent and 3.4 per cent tax increase.

The reason I put my strong support behind Councillor Leadman’s motion is because I feel that as Councillors, it is our responsibility to examine every option we have while dealing with your tax dollars.

In addition to this, Council approved a motion directing the Ottawa Police Services Board to consider their budget with no spending increases.

Please be assured, I will keep all of you informed as this process continues.

Second Give Away Day

The second City-wide Give Away Day is taking place on Oct. 13.

Several of you participated in the Stittsville Give Away Day and also in the City’s first annual Give Away Day this past summer and it was a tremendous success. This is another great opportunity for all of us across the City to divert our waste out of landfills.

Residents are invited to leave items they no longer use out on their property and help turn your trash into someone else’s treasure. Some suggestions of items to give away are books, cds, old furniture, appliances, kitchen gadgets and construction material.

Please make sure to mark your items as free and place them on your curb. Any unwanted items must be brought in after 4 p.m. Also, please remember if you have leftovers to donate them to charitable organizations or Stittsville Freecycle. For a link to Stittsville Freecycle please visit my website.

Please note that the City has scheduled Oct. 14 as a rain date for Give Away Day.

Thank You

This year’s Villagefest was another tremendous success and provided all of us with great free entertainment and good times with family and friends.

On behalf of our entire community, thank you to the Stittsville Village Association for organizing and volunteering to ensure everyone had a great time. It was great to have Mayor Larry O’Brien ride in the old-fashioned carriage with me during the parade.

This was the Mayor’s sixth visit to Stittsville-Kanata West since we began our term last December and it is great that he consistently shows strong support for our community.
