Dear residents,

Working Together Gets Results

As a Council we may disagree on certain issues, but when it comes to making wise and tough decisions with your tax dollars it is imperative that we move forward as a team to achieve this.

As we head into this year’s budget debate we have several difficult decisions on our hands. As always I am committed to bringing your key concerns and priorities to the table. Thank you to everyone who has emailed me their thoughts regarding the budget and also to those who have sent their strong words of encouragement and support for Mayor Larry O’Brien.

Since the beginning of the term, I have worked closely with the Mayor on a number of issues including waste management and transit. I look forward to working with both the Mayor and my Council colleagues to achieve the best possible scenario for all Ottawa residents.

Safety Always a Priority

Several factors contribute to keeping our community strong and healthy and I am certain each of us places safety very high on our list of priorities.

As many of you may have read in the paper recently, four incidents of criminal activity have taken place in our community and we are also dealing with ongoing vandalism issues.

Like all of you, I am greatly concerned by this and feel now more than ever, it is important for our community to be proactive. Getting involved can be as simple as making a phone call to report a suspicious incident or even taking the initiative further by setting up Neighbourhood Watch on your street.

Criminal activity has the potential to foster fear in residents but I strongly believe that by staying aware of the issues and working together with the Ottawa Police we can help maintain safety and security in our community.

I have arranged to participate in an overnight police ride through our ward to where the problem areas are and also the levels of service we are currently receiving in Stittsville-Kanata West. Please be assured I will communicate my findings and experience with all of you through my weekly column and website (www.shadqadri.com)

If you have any questions or concerns please contact my office any time at 613-580-2476 or by email at shad.qadri@ottawa.ca . If you are interested in setting up Neighbourhood Watch for your street please contact Victor McNabney at 613-236-1222 ext. 2001 or by email at vicopsnw@yahoo.com.

Also, please call 911 for all life-threatening emergencies and crimes in progress. For suspicious activities, if you witness alcohol or drug use or youth under the age of 16 out in the streets between midnight and 6 a.m. please call 613-230-6211. To report any incidents to Ottawa Police after the fact please call 613-236-1222 ext. 7300 or visit any police station. For all by-law issues or general City enquiries please call 311. Please note that by-law closes at 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and at midnight on weeknights. You can call the police after these hours (230-6211). Also, please remember to record your incident report number, as it is helpful for tracking the process and will also assist our office in any follow-up on the issue.

Jackson Trails Park Meeting

Along with Parks and Recreation Planning staff, I will be hosting a second public meeting on the concept plan for the subdivision park for Jackson Trails on Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Stittsville and District Community Centre, located in the Upper Hall, 10 Warner Colpitts Lane.

This park will be located at the northwest corner of Stittsville Main Street and Kimpton Drive. The preliminary concept plan provides a combination of active park amenities, including a soccer field, play structures, and a multi-use court used for basketball and ice-skating. In the design there is also pathways within the park and existing wooded areas being retained to provide passive parkland.

At this meeting we will be reviewing additional concept plans and discuss the concerns and comments that have been raised on the design. For more information on the park design please contact Patrick Legault, Planner, Parks and Recreation at Patrick.Legault@ottawa.ca or 613-580-2424 x13857.
