Kicking off the summer
with Shad's Park Party
Stittsville Councillior Shad Qadri
kicked off the 2010 summer season with his annual Park Party
at Village Square Park on June 12. So many residents, some
new faces and some familiar ones, enjoyed a fun day full of
activities for the whole family.
So many individuals also helped out
with the event. His Worship, Mayor Larry O’Brien, also made
an appearance and mingled with the residents in attendance.
The local emergency and health departments were on hand
providing services and educational material for families.
The Canadian Beef Farmers’ Association once again handled
BBQ duties and served some delicious food for all to enjoy.
The staff at the Goulbourn
Recreation Complex gave demonstrations to the Park Party
attendees. A big thank you as well to the
Stittsville/Goulbourn Horticultural Society for the planting
demonstrations.
Once again, thank you to the
community of Stittsville for making this tradition bigger
each year.

A legacy lives on: City unveils Trustee M. Curry Park
: On June 21, the City of Ottawa
officially declared the park located at 85 Hartsmere Drive
in Stittsville the Trustee M. Curry Park. Known for her
dedication to quality education, community activism and
leadership, she was fundamental in establishing Catholic
schools required within Stittsville to meet the needs of its
rapidly growing population. She served as a Catholic School
Board Trustee representing the Stittsville area within the
former township of Goulbourn from 1987 to 2000.
Mary Curry was a community leader and
dedicated to helping students in Stittsville succeed. This
ceremony solidifies her legacy as a bright and shining star
that will forever be remembered in Stittsville. We honour
her with this event with great pride.
The official unveiling of Trustee M.
Curry Park took place with students and staff from Guardian
Angels Catholic School, along with friends, family and
colleagues of the late Mary Curry as well as representatives
from the Ottawa Catholic School Board. Stittsville
Councillor Shad Qadri was also present to officiate the
ceremony.

New fire station for the
community
On June 4, The City of Ottawa marked the
beginning of the construction of Ottawa’s first Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design (LEDD) Silver certified
fire station, called Station 46 located on Iber Road. This
new fire station will compliment the outstanding level of
service the Stittsville community has received from the
current volunteers with the fire emergency services.
Stittsville is growing, and this new building’s look and
environmentally friendly design makes it a key component as
the community continues to grow. Once new development is
complete, the new fire station will serve 40,000 residents.
The over 12,000 square foot building provides firefighters
and volunteers with the necessary space for what they need,
such as a meeting and training room, locker rooms, offices,
an exercise area and gear room. It also has been designed to
maximize its internal space, reduce energy consumption -
with a 40-per-cent cost-savings target - and use natural
resources including outdoor light. The fire station’s
environmentally friendly features include water-efficient
landscape design, high-energy-efficient doors and windows,
renewable, recycled and natural materials used in
construction, radiant in-floor heating, attention to
internal air quality and a steel roof that attracts heat in
the winter and reflects heat in the summer.

Representatives from the Ottawa Paramedic Service said
Kelsey was very calm and provided the necessary information
required to help her father.

Stittsville sweeps
competition in Cleaning the Capital Campaign
I am
pleased to announce that the Stittsville community has won
the City’s Fall Cleaning the Capital “Ward Award,” which is
presented to the ward with the highest participation rate
for the fall campaign.
The spring and fall Cleaning the
Capital campaigns encourage and support community
involvement in the City’s seasonal clean-up efforts. This
year both campaigns achieved record participation with more
than 87,000 residents participating in litter pick-up and
graffiti removal projects. Stittsville parks, pathways,
sportsfields and creeks were cleaned by 1,500 volunteers
this past fall. City staff are already gearing up for
the spring 2010 campaign. Online registration starts March
15 and the campaign runs from April 15 to May 15.
Thank
you for helping to keep Ottawa clean, green, and
litter-free. The bar is now set for our community during the
fall clean-up!

Stittsville
welcomes Gold medalist
Mayor Larry O'Brien and Councillor Shad Qadri welcomed
Stittsville resident and gold medalist Samantha Eastop to
the Goulbourn Recreation Complex. Samantha competed in the
17th Annual World Transplant Games held in Gold Coast,
Australia between August 22-30, 2009. This was Samantha’s
second world competition.
She participated in 3 swimming and 2 track and field
events, receiving a gold medal - and setting a new World
Record - in the Ball Throw with a distance of 39.88M and a
bronze medal in the Long Jump with a distance of 2.60M.
The Summer World Transplant Games take place every two
years and attract over 1500 athletes from 69 countries.
The intent of the Games is to demonstrate the physical
success of transplant surgery and to raise awareness to the
need of increasing organ donation. To take part in the
games, you must have had one of the following transplants:
lung, kidney, liver, heart or bone marrow transplant.
Samantha had a heart transplant on November 14, 1996, at the
age of 19 months, to replace her defective heart. The
next World Transplant games will be held in 2011 in
Goteborg, Sweden.

Councillor Qadri was once again ho-ho-holding his
Christmas Card Contest for children in the community.
Children were encouraged to express their artistic and
creative side through festive, holiday cheer. Winning
submissions would be on display for thousands of people to
enjoy this holiday season, as the winning artwork is
featured on the front of the Councillor’s Christmas e-card.
A team of judges chose a total of four designs from the
three different categories: two submissions from children up
to 6 years old; one design from an artist age seven to 10;
and one from age 11 to 13.
This year’s winners were:
Tessa Neilson (age 5), Paige Publow (age 6), Bronwyn Gocan

New West
Division Police Station
opens its doors
The new West Division
Police Station, which is
located along Huntmar
Road, is open for
business. The
proximity of the new
41,000 sq. ft., $22
million police station
to our community will be
a tremendous benefit.
Currently, patrol
vehicles come out of the
Greenbank Road station;
a nearby station will
improve response times.
I have long maintained
that a visible police
presence is a comforting
sight for residents and,
most importantly, a
deterrent for others. It
reinforces the safety of
residents, which is
welcomed given the
dramatic growth of our
community and the volume
of calls the police
receives from our
community.

Qadri and
Superintendent Ralph

Lest
we forget
The Canadians who went to war in
distant lands went in the belief that the values and beliefs
enjoyed by Canadians were being threatened. They truly
believed that "Without freedom there can be no ensuring
peace and without peace no enduring freedom."
The history of war is the history of
both hope and despair. The stories of those historic battles
are the stories of the best and the worst of humanity. It is
only by recalling these terrible events that we truly find
the hope and strength we need to keep them from happening
again. That is why we gather on Remembrance Day.
On November 11, we remember and
celebrate the many brave men and women who have fought for,
and continue to fight for, the values we hold dear.
Lest we never forget the importance of
Remembrance Day.

Annual parade and celebration,
Villagefest, a tremendous success

I would like to thank the Stittsville Village Association and the many volunteers who
came together to ensure Villagefest was a tremendous
success. It was great to see the young and old come together
to continue a true village tradition. The theme of this
year’s Villagefest was honouring the brave men and women of
our City’s police force. I am sure each member of the force
felt the gratitude and appreciation our community has for
the commitment and dedication they show in protecting our
City. The floats that weaved through the heart of the
community were once again one of the highlights of the
festival.

Ottawa Green Bin program set to roll
across the City
The City of Ottawa officially kicked off
the delivery stage of the Green Bin program, a new recycling
initiative that involves collecting residential organic
waste and turning it into compost. Over the next three
months, green bins will be delivered to the majority of
Ottawa households, including residences with individual
curb-side garbage pick up and apartments with as many as six
units, in urban, sub-urban and rural village areas.
While the green bins and smaller kitchen
containers for indoor use are being delivered this fall,
collection won’t begin until the new year. At that time,
residents will be able to put their food scraps including
dairy, meat, bones and oils, food-soiled paper, yard waste
and more at the curb for composting.
 Unlike some municipal programs, Ottawa’s
Green Bin program will not accept plastics of any kind,
including diapers. This will ensure the proper composting of
materials at the local, indoor processing facility. More
information about the composting process can be found in the
Green Bin User Guide, delivered inside the green bin or
available for download at
www.greenbinottawa.ca.

Ottawa’s “green” fleet grows
The City of Ottawa
recently unveiled some of the
current “green” technologies
that are part of the municipal
fleet as well as potential
acquisitions that will reduce
greenhouse gas emissions (GHG)
and help the City become a
leading-edge municipality in the
area of environmentally
responsible management. Hybrid
vehicles and other technologies
that reduce pollution are key
components of the City’s new
Municipal Green Fleet Plan.
Fleet Services is proposing
to commit to reducing 14 per
cent of its greenhouse gas
emissions by 2012. If the action
items contained within the Green
Municipal Fleet Plan are
implemented, there will be a
total reduction of over 3,100
tonnes of emissions. The City is
introducing more hybrid vehicles
in light fleet that will result
in the reduction of an estimated
two tonnes per unit. The City is
also ensuring that vehicle size
and specification are consistent
with actual operational
requirements (right-sizing) that
will result in a reduction of
1-2 tonnes per unit and the use
of bio fuels for municipal fleet
will result in additional
reductions of 3,000 tonnes of
greenhouse gases.

Canada Day in Stittsville
The Stittsville Fire Hall was a patriotic
red and white on the morning of July 1 as Councillor Shad Qadri was
honoured to host his annual Seniors' Canada Day Breakfast with
assistance from the Stittsville Fire Department.
More than 250 local residents packed the
Stittsville firehall to enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast provided
by Nate’s Delicatessen. Dave Smith, the owner of Nate’s who makes a
special visit to Stittsville each year for Canada Day, still can’t
get over how much coffee is consumed – no wonder the line-up at Tim
Horton’s is so long.
The Schmodkas, a local singing troupe comprised
of four talented ladies from right hear in Stittsville, sang some
old favourites and unearthed some long-forgotten patriotic tunes,
including an old ESSO gas jingle.
A big thank you to our local volunteer
firefighters who not only opened their doors for the event, but
generously assisted in ensuring the morning ran smoothly. Their
commitment and dedication to our community is unparalleled.

Thanking those who
shape our community
The Stittsville Appreciation Awards follow in the success footsteps of
the Goulbourn Recognition Awards, which ended in 2002. I wanted to
revive these awards as I felt it necessary to honour the many
individuals who shape our local community. Your contributions should
not go unnoticed, and each of you deserve this recognition and
appreciation.
The 2008-2009
Stittsville Appreciation Award recipients, along with the past
recipients of the Goulbourn Recognition Award, will be honoured
through a new plaque located inside the Goulbourn Recreation
Complex. Their legacy will continue to be celebrated for many years
to come.
The 2008-2009
Stittsville Appreciation Awards were presented to Luc and Nancy
Therrien from Stittsville Glass and Sign, Katrina Harder, Mary
Durling and Sterling Howie at a celebration evening on April 21.
Sterling Howie, pictured with Bee Griffiths, the wife of
the late Roger Giffiths, is the Roger Griffiths Memorial Citizen
of the Year award recipient, and has been a volunteer firefighter
in our community for over 40 years. He’s been a mentor to
new firefighters helping them become better firefighters, better
people and better community members. He’s worked tirelessly
for charities and community initiatives in order to improve the
quality of life in Stittsville. It was a great honour to have Bee
Griffith, the wife of the late Roger Griffith, on hand to present
this award.
Mary Durling, the Senior Citizen of the Year recipient, has been
living in our community since 1967, and raised four terrific boys
as a single mother. She is an active member of the Ladies
Auxiliary at the Legion, and next year will be her 40th
anniversary. She canvasses door to door for numerous charities,
such as the Canadian Cancer Society, March of Dimes and the
Kidney Foundation. In previous years she was involved with the
Heart and Stroke Foundation, CNIB and the Arthritis Society of
Canada. She has raised thousands of dollars for these
initiatives.
Katrina Harder, the recipient of the Youth Citizen of
the Year award, was recognized for her considerable contributions to
local community events, including Canada Day, Parade of Lights,
and Villagefest. She has proven that, despite her age,
she is a true leader and example who works tirelessly to build a
better community.
Luc and Nancy Therrien, the
recipients of the Business of the Year award, were described by
nominators as incredibly supportive of local community charities and
initiatives. Their willingness to promote community spirit fuels a

Living
Wall unveiled at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex
Cynthia O'Brien’s
Interdependencies #2, a project commissioned through Ottawa’s Public
Art Program, was released to art enthusiasts on January 15.
Cynthia’s artwork consists of more than 2,000 individual clay leaves
arranged in the shape of a tree reaching up from a planter that is
incorporated into the living wall, an interior garden located within
the GRC. The tree’s shape is based on our neighbourhood streets, and
at the base of the tree sits ceramic vessels that symbolize the
seeds of the Goulbourn community from which the tree grows.
Cynthia’s artwork is intricately linked to our community as she has
inscribed many local family names on the back of the leaves. The
names, unseen by the public, are a hidden legacy from the
contributing individuals and the artist.
Councillor Shad Qadri and artist Cynthia O'Brien cut the ribbon
